Micro SD HC > Micro SD
« on: 03 July, 2018, 01:04:24 pm »
I bought a Micro SD card for my son's phone but on closer inspection it turns out to be actually a Micro SD HC. The symbols on the packaging seem to indicate that this will fit a Micro SD HC or Micro SD XC slot but not a "classic" Micro SD. Prising his phone apart, the relevant receptacle is simply labelled "Micro SD". Will it fit? Have I misread the somewhat hieroglyphic icons?

Should do, yes, the HC/XC is all about how many squiggly things you can stuff on it. NOT a MINI SD.

ETA - it's unlikely the phone will not cope with an HC card, might not with an XC.

So the HC card should be compatible with the non-HC slot? I'm not sure what "squiggly things" you mean.

bits and bytes.

Standard - up to 4Gb, HC, 4 - 32, XC > 32 Gb

ETA Check on the phone manual but it is unlikely not to support HC. Not impossible. All the same physical size.

according to the latest specs, it continues...

XC: 32 Gb - 2TB
UC: 2TB - 128 TB

My memory agreed with the graphic, that the limit on SD standard was 2 GB. Having said that, many SD or SDHC devices will cope with larger cards, though probably not up to the limit of the next category up.

It will take when, and if, they are actually available, 3 days at 985 MB/s to read out a 128 TB card.

The (expensive) higher-speed variants appear to have a different 'pins' layout.  eg SD XCII etc.

Yes, UHS-II or UHS-III has an extra row of pins. Though it should still be backwards compatible. ie the extra pins are ignored, it just works at a lower speed.
