Recommend me a (logistically) easy 4-600km perm
« on: 02 August, 2018, 08:50:20 am »
I need either a 4 or a 6 for an SR and nothing on the calendar works for me.

I could hack about up here in the North East on roads I've ridden before, but I'd really quite like to expand my horizons a bit (and bag some more squares).

I'm thinking something like a train station start/finish, with well spaced and specced 'controls' and, if a 600, somewhere at 350-380km for a nice snooze.

Oh, and a couple of AAA points would be ideal, but lets not go overboard...

Anyone?

Train to Dalmeny and Twilight 600?
Sleep stop at Corran visited at about 230k for check-in, change into night kit, dump stuff you don't want to humph around Ardgour; then again for sleep at about 360k.

MattC's faffers 400 from Didcot parkway would seem to be an option, though its a pretty popular area so you might have already ridden most of it. We rode it a few months ago and had a great time.

http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA05/

Or Snowdon, Lleyn & Lakes 400, also from Wellington http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JHA18/
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Understandable.

Asparagus and Strawberries 400 starts in Manningtree, but would need a change of trains to get to the start. There are Travelodges at about 320km (Barton Mills, Newmarket or off route at Cambridge Fourwentways) to make it into a very lesuirely 400

Porkers 400, although Poole is a long way from the north East... but you can stay at the RNLI college, which is great!

Not sure I could resist the bright lights of Blackpool. That Scotch one is winning so far, would make up for my missing the 1000 I think. Fancy it?  ;)

About the Porkers or the RNLI? The latter is a truly amazing hotel and not very expensive... slighlty more than a Travelodge... I think we paid 70 quid for a double room with view on the bay and breakfast included last March

The former. Isn't it about 46 AAA points or something?

Come and do Perrin's 3 Steps 2 7 with me. If you ask nicely he might let you enter (may contain traces of Welshness).

It fairly comprehensively fails the "logistically easy" criterion, too.

It looks fantastic. I'm definitely putting it on my own to-do list - not least because it includes all my favourite bits of the 1000.

Asparagus and Strawberries 400...

If the Porkers is at one extreme of the AAA scale, the A&S would be at the other... lovely ride though.

Why not get the train down to Exeter and do the Kernow & South West 600 perm ?

It's a lovely little pootle around Devon, Cornwall & Somerset, that even has a ferry ride in it ...

That's a shame.  The Cambrian 4E can be stared from Knighton or Machynlleth, both of which have stations, and the 4F can start from Knighton or Aberdare.  Or for more AAA points than you can poke a stick at the 6C (as a BR rather than a super-randonnee) has Knighton and Llanwrst as station start and finish points.

See, I was working that weekend, but work have rejigged it again so that I'm off that weekend but working the Friday. Not sure I could get to the start. Where are you staying the night before?

Machynlleth
Fails the logistically easy bit; if anyone asks me where I'm going I'm screwed.

(One of the many highlights of the Mille Cymru was when Deano was asked 'where are you off to?' and he replied 'I dunno, I can't pronounce it.)

Ah handy, McNasty provides no info on the AUK event page and never remember to ask him about it and the Kingdom Come.
Some of my favourite roads in there.
and least favourite too, not a fan of the A82 outwith the off season, and there's no daylight in the off season.

I spent two days at the control and I still can't spell the name of the town... was it Llanwrtyd?

Yes, the A82 is a bit 'orrible.

I hadn't realised it was available as a trad perm when I did it as a DIYxGPS ( Advisory Route).
FWIW, here are the controls I submitted:
