Best 15mm track nut spanner to carry?
« on: 12 June, 2008, 10:46:41 am »
Anyone got any ideas or recommendations?

I want something that I can carry on the bike at all times so it needs to be fairly light but also long enough to give a fair amount of leverage. Is there an aluminium track spanner? Also would prefer a ring spanner.

The Surly Jethru Tule is what you want!

It even doubles up as a bottle opener  :P
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Buy a 15mm combination spanner (Halfords ones are good value) and hacksaw the open end off it.  I doubt that an aluminium spanner would last very long; take a dump before you go out for a ride instead.

The Campag one is lovely, a classic (I've had mine almost twenty years).  A bit long compared to the Tule, but the leverage is worth it.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I'll second that. Got mine from HubJub (Also highly recommended).

It's small but it's got a lovely broad handle that's really comfortable when you have a b****r of nut to undo. I speak from roadside experience.

...and everyone seems to do it at £17-50, except Brixton Cycles who only charge £17-00.

Of course, whilst Wiggle charge £17-50 like everyone else, I get 10% off since I'm a platinum customer, which makes it £15-75, so they win!
Actually, it is rocket science.

I shan't be replacing the 6" adjustable that lurks in the bottom of my rack-pack.

Surly one looks great and I need to investigate the Campag option too. Although paying £17 for a spanner  :o

Good quality 15mm combi spanner. Wheel removal and sort pedal removal in one tool.

Exactly what I've done.

+1 for the Surly spanner.

I will freely admit to inappropriately touching my Jethro Tule whilst in a public place  ::-)

Top tip. Use the same spanner to tighten your wheel in the workshop. You do not want to find that a wheel tightened with a big shop spanner is immovable with a small on the road spanner.

At £1.99 the Halfords Metric Dumbell Bike Spanner is hard to beat. Not as cool as Jethro Tule, but does the job and will fit neatly into a saddlebag.

...even better, since they've got a 3 for the price of 2 offer, if you can find two friends who also want one, it'll only cost you £1-33 each.
Actually, it is rocket science.

The Campag one is called a "peanut butter wrench".

The Campag one is called a "peanut butter wrench".

Only by merkins, what's wrong with good old "crank spanner"?

That Surly Jethru Tule is an ugly overpriced piece of nonsense, £17  It probably weighs more than a combi spanner. High quality tools should have slim and fine proportions.

Yeah, but it will probably break. And what's worse - it will have "Halfords" written on it!!

Doesn't say Halfords on it. Hasn't broken yet - new in January.

But have you used it yet?

My vote would be for a combi spanner with the ring end cut off and wound with insulating tape, but since I got a Jethro Tule half price at the bike show a couple of years ago that has changed.

I broken 2 of them things, and when the break they break into nice sharp things. A fella at the LBS cut his hands open on one when that gave up the ghost, and therefore he strongly recommend something stronger.

I therefore went down to the local car bit sales man and asked him for something strong and stubby and he got me these ...

   LaserTools | Spanner - Stubby 15 mm (2812)

The 15mm is around 4 and a half inch long, feel heavy duty and strong. I have stood on them while putting on my back wheel and the didn't break.

Around 4-5 quid and well worth it.
