Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South.
« on: 28 February, 2015, 05:33:13 pm »
I enjoyed last week about Tennessee and Kentucky. This week it's about Alabama and Georgia. A nice mix of music documentary and travelogue, 9.15pm BBC2, there's a James Brown documentary on afterwards.

I switched it on just in time to see Clarence Carter singing Patches which is one if my favourites.

Just watching the James Brown on iPlayer - it is absolutely brilliant, especially how it places him in the social context of the time - a real eye opener (just been reading Natchez Burning, too)

Songs of the south up next, both were hat tip from Jarvis cocker on R6M (just as well as normally I don't watch anything)

Excellent program.
And they used "Can’t you see" by The Marshall Tucker Band for the closing credits a song that doesn't get enough airplay over here. Probably does in the Southern US though.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I didn't enjoy ep. 2 as much as the first one, probably because I am the sort of heathen left cold by most soul, gospel etc. but it was still teh Aces.  Really looking forward to next week though.

For series 2 they can send him to Texas :)

He isn't doing Florida unfortunately. Would have been nice to hear some swamp funk.

Bootsie Collins is always good value, and was amusing in the James Brown show, I see Mick Jagger was one of the producers.
Reginald D Hunter has to be the politest man in show business. I suppose his Catholic School upbringing has enhanced his Southern courtesy. The fact that his school was 98% white gives him an interesting perspective on racism.

Nice to be reminded that Lynyrd Skynyrd were from Florida, not Alabama.

I don't think you need to be a Christian to enjoy gospel.  I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama a few years ago and, despite being a born-again atheist, went home dancing on air.

In the interest of balance substitute "philistine" for "heathen".  No religiosity, or lack of it, was intended.

I'm am atheist, always have been, always will be.  I can't think of many things more uplifting than a full-on Gospel Choir giving it the full beans.

I would certainly go to a church to listen to it.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

BBC4 are repeating this series just now, for those who missed it first time around.
