Christoph Strasser attempting the 24h world record
« on: 20 March, 2015, 05:54:48 pm »
He's currently doing it at Berlin Tempelhof airport (I've cycled round there) so there could be random passers-by also there.

I had a read of his website (only in German) and the live feed doesn't seem to be working for some reason but it should be interesting!

Interesting!

IIRC 2 Uk riders have exceeded the quoted Robic "record" of 840km (Wilko with 541miles being the longest) in UK 24h TTs.
So if he beats that, i hope he reaches his 900km target to sort-of "unify" the various records :P

Given that it's several decades since I last competed in a TT I've rather lost touch with who certifies what for time/distance records. 10 minutes googling reveals that, as mattc aludes to, there are records and records, depending on who's list you look at:

Guinness World Records has 903.76km (561.57 miles) by Marko Baloh (Ch) as the absolute record but that was on a 250m velodrome (8-9 Oct 2010)
UMCA unpaced road record 521.975 miles (839.39km) Jure Robic 2004
CTT/RTTC Andy Wilkinson 541.17 miles (870.93km) 2011
RRA Gethin Butler 505.8 miles (840.04km) 2001

I presume the present go would resemble an RRA attempt.
They laughed when I said I was going to be a stand-up comedian. They're not laughing now.

It appears to be laps of a circuit.

Yes, an abandoned airfield.

Not everyone on a German forum was amused when I quoted Wilko's record.

You're only trying to cause trouble — I know, cos the UCI told me.

Why?

Because they didn't know about Wilko, they were thinking that the WR was a lot lower. So it wasn't smashing the old record but a tight call.

That's the indoor record, which he broke at the Grenchen velodrome in Switzerland.  It was formerly held by Marko Baloh, who was officiating for this attempt.
