I'm sure I just double started a thread...?
An earlier start today, heading north from Basingstoke to the Tidmarsh Rd at a pretty good pace. Hope he has a good day today
-
(yes you did - I read your first version; a disturbance in the force ... )
Now, if we ignored history before Dec 29th, things would be looking OK right now. He's done a poor-ish day into some headwind to Basingstoke; but now he's set off a lot earlier than recent days, with a lot of land to his North, and the strongest Southerlies you could hope for forecast all day. And he's averaging 25+kph.
Could be a massive day. It'd be fun to see him finish the year with 500 miles directly North, as he doesnt need to ride anywhere on Jan 1st :P

You did, I deleted mine.
Go carefully Steve

Thanks SoreTween...something else odd happened then - I did a reply to your post, but the text I wrote vanished  I'd better have a lie down ::-)

I blame the beer.
I went to the doctor once and told him that I felt terrible. After an examination the doctor said he could find nothing wrong and it could be the drink. I told him I would come back when he was sober.
It is that add timeless period between Christmas and New Year when days just disappear never to be found again.

I hope Steve has a good day. Crawling to the end of 2015 on his hands and knees would be nobody's choice.

I think today's thread is going to be a goody ...

They're usually down the back of the sofa, or else they've rolled under the fridge.

Obviously not working hard enough if you've time to post here ;)
(Am likewise "working")

Well, I'm still in bed. But 'at work' in Miami. Shall actually begin working about 3 this afternoon, local time.

Lunch at home for Steve? It's evil out there :(
-
From the Ivan-SCIENCE I think he's stopped for a kickabout with the MK Dons.
-
Confirm that it is worse than evil out there. Head wind all the way to work - like riding into a brick wall.

....but it was pushing him all the way from Basingstoke to home, as shown by the weather map and his higher speeds.
Doesn't look as if he is going to be heading straight out onwards to Norfolk though so perhaps there is going to be another shorter day with more rest on the cards.

I'm fully aware bryn that Steve has a tail rather than my head wind. I might be a girl but I can read a weather map. You kind of get the hang of it after multiple 18,000 mile years.
My point being its really fierce so he should be zooming along, not simply trundling at a higher speed. Given current state of play the last thing he will be able to do is ride into the wind.
-
Steve has now according to the tracker been stationary for 2 hours.
75.6 estimated tracker miles.
-
Seems Steve is on a 'rest' day with 124kms
This weeks numbers so far;
Total = 393km
Daily ave = 131km
Short fall = 593km (measured using a Godwin, 330km per day)
-
Moving again, North or NorthEast it seems.

Yup, seems to be inline with the latest health update:
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1656565704592059&id=1520678421514122&refid=17
(hope that works!)
My early optimism for an epic tailwind charge has been curtailed.
Shame. :(

I remember an article from a few years back (was it Arrivee?) where the perception of wind direction was analyzed.
IIRC the vectors of velocity and wind mean that the majority of the time you are riding into a head wind. It is only rarely that all the stars are aligned.
Allez Steve

Tracker live again and moving East....

...and now North through Chatteris. Hopefully he's keeping his HR low & it's worth bearing in mind that according to the FB post, his health has improved since changes to his diet which I think were based on professional advice.
-
162ish miles in 14 hours, add another 3 and a bit hrs for a Godwin and you are looking at a two o'clock finish. If not then it's more deficit to make up. I hope he's got some nutrition on him for when he stops or has a lift back to MK pre-booked.

162ish miles in 14 hours
Strategy and everything else aside, that’s a hell of ride in current conditions, all factors considered.

Forgive me if I sound harsh but it's not when compared to Searvogel. At the turn of Spring he knocked out 254 miles in just under 13 hours IIRC. Steve has had a tailwind all day, granted it ain't warm and it ain't pan flat but it could be better.
-
That ride shows determination but it also shows empty legs. That tailwind should have blasted him down the road.
-
The 14 hours includes a 4 hour stop. in MK!
Looks like premier inn again.

I was under the impression that conditions were considerably shittier than that. That’s a tough day’s riding in my book. I know how it compares, in the record stakes, but there is already a thread for that.
-
Notwithstanding the distance is less than we'd all like it to be, it's still a hell of a ride - as it has been most days.
-
While it was blowing a hooley when I went to bed last night it was also binning down, and the weather was heading in the general direction of East Anglia.

I think it eased as it progressed east. We've had rain, but the strong winds have gone. Not a great day for riding, but certainly not too bad for the end of December.
