(East-ish) London forummers - help me find a building!
« on: 05 September, 2013, 11:53:28 am »
Years ago, when I worked in the Clifton St./Christopher St. area, I used to quite wander out for random walks at lunchtime.

On one of these walks, I noticed a building with a name on the facade: "Anthony Oakden" (Or possibly "Tony Oakden").  I think it was in an Art Deco type script, in carved/moulded relief on red brick, although that may be misremembered.

I _think_ it was probably somewhere within the red area on this map (or possibly on the paler pink one, depending how far I walked that day), although it may be off to one side, I guess.

Has anyone seen the building in question on their commute, or other wanderings round London?  I'd like to find it again so I can send a picture of it to one of my uncles who has the same name.

I've done a bit of random wandering around the area, to no avail yet, and have done a bit of virtual tourism via Google streetview, but as yet haven't spotted it.

Googling reveals a hardware company based at 86-90 Curtain Rd called A Oakden & Sons Ltd (about half way down), and further that the Director was called Anthony Leonard Oakden. They closed in 2000 - would that fit with 'years ago'? It's now a Foxtons and doesn't seem to have your sign on, but could that be the one?

Cheers - it's certainly possible that was it - it's around the right time (prob somewhere between 1996 and 2002, I'd guess).

I was wondering if the lettering might survive any defunctness of the business (since it was a: fairly architectural - built into brickwork - and b: I think the business itself may already have been defunct when I saw the sign).

I'll have a look in my Curtain Road archive, you never know, I have a lot of shots from the area.

Myself and Raff (can't remember his name on here) are working in the area atm so will have a look out.

Thanks all.

I've had a look on the map and on streetview, and Curtain Rd doesn't feel like the road I have dim memories of.  The road I'm thinking of is quite a bit narrower in my, admittedly hazy, memory.

(In the even hazier, even less reliable, parts of my memory, the road in question is one of the narrow, roughly East-West aligned ones rather than one of the roughly North-South-ish ones, but I have no idea why I think this so it may be total fantasy!)
