Eagerly awaiting n+1
« on: 09 July, 2013, 04:49:34 pm »
I have already posted about my lovely Circe but I have been thinking (and inspired by others on yacf) that a full size tandem might be a really good idea for audax.

Having minimal cash (and not wanting to fork out too much incase we hate it) I bought a starter tandem on ebay - it's a 501 steel framed dawes "backstreet" but more importantly it is red. I know they were pretty much entry level but it appears to have been well loved and I am happy to tinker about with components when the funding stream improves.

Expected Date of Delivery is friday - I am very excited.....just need to find space in the garage now.  :)

Well done 'Mary'.  Hope you both get on with it.

Garage space is a perennial problem though.  I find myself having to move 4-5 bikes and a tandem just to work in the garage now.  OK when it's fine, not so good when it's wet.  Mind you 'my' garage seems to have inherited a freezer and a washing machine so there is even less space now.

Woo! New tandem

We keep the tandems in the dining room.  :D

That looks very similar in build to my Street Scene, which has been my solo bike for, um, 17 years now. The Street Scene frame is indistinguishable from a Horizon of the period; it's heavy but well made with good braze-ons, cable runs, etc. Definitely several steps above the level of a Bike Shaped Object (should that be TSO?) and worth putting love into. Well done!

Brilliant! Don't think I could persuade mrlogic though....

Tandem arrived this morning.  With original owner's manual and immaculate frame. Could do with new saddles and I think I'll put skinnier tyres on, but all in all pretty good for £220  ;D

Thanks everyone! I think mrlogic has come round too - it is the perfect size for him, and he has now started calling it "our tandem" rather than "your tandem"

Looks good.

N+1 seems an insufficient increment for a tandem

Ooh, pretty!  Hope you both have lots of fun riding it.

We tend to talk about t+1.  Sadly, it's all talk.  We've only just got the tandem we do have out of the living room (where it lived just inside the front door for several years), by buying a bigger shed...

Problem with t+1 is that it's easily confused with n+1.5  :D

n+2/2?

I maintain that it is only n+0.75*

Wouldn't that be a tandem trike?

(my brain's too hot for this sort of thing)

It depends how you offset the wheel shortfall against the extra frame tubing.

Mrlogic and I have agreed we will get a Thorn at some unidentified point in the future when cashflow improves

I wonder if the N+1 /T+1 / N+2/2 debate depends on whether the tandem is being bought by 2 people who both require a new bike (presumably N+2/2), or it is being bought by one person who likes tandems ?T+1.5 or someone who generally likes bikes and finds a tandem fills the N+1 requirement?

Looks like you got yourself a real steal there! Not sure you had much of a problem finding space in the garage ;-)
