Overnight TPM, Mk II (16-17 Sept)
« on: 30 July, 2016, 03:30:56 pm »
Following last year's success, I will be running my Thames Path Meander as an overnight ride again this year.
Last year's threads are here and at the other place.

The details:
* Depart 23:00 from Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge.
* Standard Thames Path Meander route, with some diversions due to closed parks, finish near Tower of London; 50km, more or less.
* Along the way I will regale/bore (delete as appropriate) with historical trivia.
* We'll stop at Woolwich Te5co* for threeses; or BYO sustenance, both liquid and solid.  *No longer 24/7, alternatives being explored.
* Breakfast will most likely be at Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street Station.
* It's a silly ride, so feel free to get in the spirit.  Bike decoration is encouraged; fortified beverages will not be frowned upon.
* If you employ flashing front/rear lights on the ride you will end up in the Thames - you're bike will be spared if I happen to like it.
* A good front light is vital.  Many stretches are unlit and surfaces can be less than perfect.
* If you commit to doing the ride, please send me your mobile number via PM; I will reciprocate.
* IMPORTANT: The Woolwich ferry does not operate overnight so we will use the tunnel.  There is no guarantee either/both lifts will be operational, necessitating the use of stairs (S: _?_; N: 126).  Keep this in mind when choosing your steed.

I shall be in ABROAD, with the Fridays, so will miss the opportunity to do this on a mountain bike (as I swore I would last time while re-positioning the Brompton's seatpost after one of the many sections of pavé).

Interested,  I can do the trains from Liverpool for £16 each way.   Hopefully I won't be too tired on Saturday night.  The RLPO are doing all the Beethoven symphonies in a 2 week period & its the 4th & 5th that evening.

Kim, enjoy ABROAD, but watch out for the FORRINS.  I hear they're everywhere over there.

Andrew, huzzah!   Which reminds me...

If anyone needs to kill time before the start, I suggest The Mudlark, as it is close and has bicycle parking facilities.  If you plan to stop there first please say so here, as others may be willing to meet there first.

As I can't make next weekends ride due to missing the cheap tickets, I've booked early for this one.  Arriving Euston 22:09 , departing 12:07 on the Saturday.

Looks like £22 or so for open ticket. If this is the case then I am in. I will need leading by the nose to the needle. Will sort out tomorrow.

From which station?  If King's Cross, see my reply to nikki in the other TPM thread.  I did a route from Euston for her, but KX is close enough.

If Liverpool Street, get on to Bishopsgate and go south.  It may also be possible to ride in with Wowbagger (if he comes), or I may be able to swing by as it's not far off my route into town.

* We'll stop at Woolwich Te5co for threeses

This is likely to be a disappointment: the store no longer has 24h opening.

I can't offhand think of an alternative either - sorry. If I was around I could at least offer loo and refreshments, but three or four km before Woolwich is probably a bit early, and in any case it currently looks like I'm going to be tied up that night.

Well that's rather inconsiderate of them!

I'll have to have to do a recce soon and look around.  Late opening off-license or chip shop?  BYO is always an option.

Tea Hut is very early on, and no loos (albeit there are convenient hedges shortly further on).

Still a possibility, I guess - I don't know the 3am life of Woolwich well enough to think of anything better, though I suppose there's bound to be a kebab shop or three.

This place

Claims to be 24hr, albeit loo-less, and it is worth noting that the website that comes from is *ahem* liberal with accuracy - like it is showing Tesco in Woolwich as 24hr - which we know it's not, and the placement of the pin in question refers to shop in a different street. There are around half a dozen emporia there within a few yards of one another, all of which look like they'll sell you a Lebara or Lyca phone service at 03:00am, should you want one.
I wouldn't trust it without a reccie backed up by some questions being asked robustly - and probably still not trust it after that.

Greenwich Council website gives:

Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich 24 hours 50p Disabled access (free)
Southwood road, New Eltham 24 hours 50p Disabled access (free)

More options at the link below, but I don't know how close to the route they are.

Useful, thanks.

Which reminds me, I need to take along my radar key on my next recce to see if it is of any use on some gates on the route.

I'm up for the night version too, although I'm just about to leave for the daylight variant. ;D

Since I'm already in That London, I can fairly easily bring my cooking equipment with me, and we can brew up tea/coffee, given somewhere flatish and not too busy to put the stove.  I did it last time, and had an al fresco espresso. :)
Actually, it is rocket science.

Just over two weeks to go!

I'll do a food-focused recce this weekend and let you know what should be available.  And no, I will not be doing a taste-test of any available purveyors of toothy comestibles.
