"What Difference Does It Make?" and "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths.

Both would figure highly in the "awesome riffs" stakes as well.
I'm not a Smiths fan, but totally agree with the above (although I can never remember which of those two is which!)
The intro to "What Difference Does It Make?" is actually quite bouncy, and has the classic Johnny Marr 'jangle'. "How Soon Is Now?" is a reverb-laden dirge based around an F# chord.

Oh, and "The Queen Is Dead" is awesome too. This version, however, is awesomer ...

I would have gone for 'This Charming Man' myself.  The Smiths must have been good at intros.

Anyone for a game of Intro Association?  ;D

The intro to Orbital's 'Satan' samples the spoken word opening to the Butthole Surfer's 'Sweat Loaf'. ;)

In turn, Sweat Loaf utilises a warped riff similar to the verse riff from Black Sabbath's 'Sweet Leaf', which is another nomination for this thread, courtesy of the hacking cough that tracks from left speaker to the right before the guitars kick in.

My two favourite spoken word intros are featured in:

Jesus Built My Hotrod - Ministry (has a nice spoken outro as well)  8)
Prime Mover - Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction  ;D

My favourite spoken intro has to be "PWEI Vs The Moral Minorty"

And the rest of the Eliminator album.

Having said that, Thug's probably the only track that doesn't hit you between the ears right from the start.

Speaking of Gimme All your Lovin', what about Gimme Some Lovin' by the Spencer Davis Group.

Pounding bass then swirling organs and that glorious hysterical vocal. It's just a shame about the damn Vitamin advert  :-\

One of my favourite spoken word intros:

Quote
Brothers and Sisters! I wanna see a sea of hands out there! Let me see a sea of hands! I want everybody to kick up some noise! I wanna hear some revolution out there, brothers! I wanna hear a little revolution! Brothers and sisters: the time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you are gonna be the problem, or whether you are gonna be the solution. That's right! You must choose, brothers! You must choose! It takes five seconds! Five seconds of decision! Five seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet! It takes five seconds to realize that it's time to move! It's time to get down with it! Brothers, it's time to testify and I want to know: are you ready to testify? Are you ready?! I give you a testimonial: The MC5!

For a chanted intro, The Lone Ranger - that was very amusing when it came up on the intros round of  Never Mind the Buzzcocks a few years ago.

She sells sanctuary is one that has some real memories for me. Back in the late 80s we used to use it as the first thing played through our PA once it had been set up. Crank it up to 11, listen to the sweet tinkly bit at the start then feel your guts get ripped out as the wall of sound hits  :)

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor was a good one to kick things off with - a darkened room, full of smoke, and fire up the laser (again back in the 80s, when they were just becoming available and hadn't turned naff) before bringing the whole rig up in a blaze of light as it gets going.

There's lots of great rock ones though, like Whole Lotta Rosie  (Angus! Angus!)

Particulalry good if you like Hammond organs.

The ending is pretty much spot on as well.
