Wrist
« on: 18 November, 2008, 11:28:18 am »
OK, I've probably whinged enough, so you all know I fell and hurt my wrist.

Now, I should be practical and actually do something about it.

It feels stiff and uncomfortable from above the knobbly bit of the wrist down the side and across the back of my hand and out along the little finger.

Barely any visible swelling.

Should I just shut up & take painkillers, or is it worth getting some sort of support for it?

FTR, I can't take ibuprofen or cocodamol.  Mind you, I shouldn't really be taking the amount of paracetomol I am doing :(

Did you fall and hurt your wrist ? When was this ? I (genuinely) missed it.

If it was within last 48 hours then get a support from BOOTS if you feel the need and then give it another couple of days.

If you are really concerned then get down to A&E .

If you are taking more than the recommended dosage of paracetamol then buy a bottle of single malt and take that instead ---- NOT AS WELL.

But don't you work in a medical environment ?

All good.

And there are four nurses and seven doctors in the building :-[

I'm trying to rest it, but I have to use my PC, though I'm not currently doing anything more strenuous.

Ice?  Umm... I might give that a whirl later.

Thanks.

John, I did fall last night on some wet leaves in the dark.  I thought everyone would have been fed up of my moaning by now ;D

There's a pharmacy across the road - i could ask them too.

Is it your right hand ? Your mouse hand ? Maybe try mousing with the other hand to rest the bad one more. Doesn't take long to become competent with the other hand and can be fun trying.

Have you seen your GP? And ibuprofen is also available as a gel.

Sounds like either internal bruising, or perhaps nerve or tendon pain. Is the pain worse when you bend your fingers or when you touch the sore bits? If more than the safe dosage of paracetamol isn't touching it, I think it's worth having a word with one of the GPs.

It's not very sore to the touch, it's more moving it.

Can you be more specific about which movements? Bending the fingers? Straightening them? Which fingers?

I do think a quick lookover by a GP is in order.

It's when I grip anything, or bend the wrist forward or back.  Twisting is uncomfortable, but not painful.  Typing is tricky cause it twinges if I use the finger separately.

Get it looked at so you follow the correct course of treatment.  If you keep the hand still for prolonged periods it will swell and become even more stiff.

Ice is your best friend.

Let us know when you have been seen.

I posted last night that you should seek advice if it still hurt today.

I'm old-fashioned enough to think that eyeballing and 'laying of hands' are better than interwebby advice. It might just be bruised, there might be trouble with the hook of the hamate bone. I don't know.

Clarion,  Do they have an ultrasound machine in the surgery?

When I crashed off the icy ski run last year I thought I'd sprained my thumb.  2,500 miles of cycling later I was cross that the sprain wasn't going away despite ICE (note lack or R in RICE ::-)) and commented on it to the physio.

She put the ultrasound on it and I hit the ceiling.  Hairline fracture.  She said that ultrasound picks up some fractures that x-rays miss.

Rest was all that was needed.  Fine in a month.

Reply #14 and we've not had a single "sprained wrist" gag?

For Shame.

Thanks for that Charlotte.

I've got through the main meeting of the day, and I've seen one of the GPs.  She says I'm to go to A&E, do not pass Go, etc etc...

I'm off. More news later ago... :-\

OK.  Been checked.  Been sent home with my wrist strapped and me holiday snaps.

No break, thanfully (or else I might have been struggling with plaster :-\ )

Lots of damage to tendons etc, though :( :( :(

No cycling for a while :o

Ah shit.

You know you're in trouble when a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon keeps saying 'Weird' as he looks at your X-rays. :-\

He even showed them (and the urgent CT Scan he ordered) to five other consultants.

He did try to refer me for hand surgery today, but the surgeon wasn't in. :o

Seems I've got a dislocated wrist bone that the consultant thought couldn't be dislocated. :(

Amazing what you can do when you don't know what you have done, if that makes sense?

Good luck, extra huggles.

Did you really do that riding your bike, C?

Or is there some other underlying cause?  ;)

I was asked a couple of times whether I had any previous injury to my wrist.  It's been in action, but I've never broken anything round there (only ever toes), and no sprains or anything, so it's a mystery... ???

Thanks for the good thoughts.  I'm right fed up of not being on the bike :(
