Winter city break destinations
« on: 04 October, 2017, 01:12:21 pm »
Where's a good place to go for a short holiday (without bikes) in February?

Reykjavik is top of the wishlist but stupidly expensive. Cheaper suggestions welcome.

Seville looks tempting.

It's a shithole.

Also, we already 'did' Bruges a few years ago. Good suggestion though - February is a great time to visit, when it's not too busy. I like the alcoves.

We did Prague last year so that's off the list too.

Seville is great - we were there last week!  The Spanish trains also seem really easy to use (based on a sample of 1) and Seville is about 45 minutes by train from Cordoba and a bit less from Cadiz - we went to Cordoba on the train and saw the Cadiz train on the departure board at the station.  I've not been to Cadiz, but it is on the list...

Barcelona is also good (at least it was one November - still just about shorts weather, probably a bit colder in Feb.)

We've been to Barcelona a couple of times otherwise that would definitely be on the shortlist. Likewise Lisbon.

Tallinn looks interesting.

Montpelier ? Getting Brits away from winter is what the South of France was invented for.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Interesting idea. My wife lived in Montpellier for a while, wonder how she'd feel about going back there...

Another vote for Barcelona - our visit a couple of years ago did wonders for my SAD. But I think I would avoid that area just now.

You seem to have been to lots of nice and interesting places already. I think you should change it up a bit. How about Jaywick?

Madeira was OK – decent climate, nice walks, chilled once you get away from the (mostly German, for some reason) tourists. I'd go back again, preferably without the stinking cold.

I'm a big fan of Bilbao, but I've never been there in February.

We went camping on Mersea Island a few years ago. Had a great time! You can keep your C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser gate - we've seen otters fucking in broad daylight in Colchester zoo.

Vilnius is good. I'm told Kaunas is too – something about a mile-long arcade with cyclists and trams(???). Ooh, Kosice, Vienna, another vote for Budapest... and we haven't even got into western Europe yet! A disvote for Prague, it's beautiful but it's a bit too much; probably better in winter, mind.

Nice,  old town.  Great place.  (Nice-monaco/Menton 1,50e on bus 100, Nice- Antibes/Cannes 1,50e on bus 200) thats 4 days catered for without exploring the city itself, only 20 mins from airport, bus 98.

+1 for Montpellier, or Marseille (or both!)

Lisbon is good for the winter - cheap, warm, interesting (for other potential visitors, just reread the OP...)

If you do go for Montpelier I can recommend The Grand Hotel du Midi just off the Place de La Comédie,

https://www.grandhoteldumidimontpellier.com/en/

Its slap bang on the main square. Can't comment on the food as we never ate there what with it being surrounded by cafes and restaurants.

(Edited as I mixed up the hotel name)

Nice looks to be a nice place , I've transited through a couple of times but only spent half a day walking around.    I enjoyed my trip to Madrid in February.   Barcelona might be a bit lively at the moment....

Florence, Rome or Venice ?

I was in Nice a few weeks back. A disappointment of biscuits, but I liked the rest of it. We stayed on the seafront, plenty central, with the big hill up the road. Did plenty of walking and swimming in the sea. You might not want to do the latter in winter though. I preferred it to Marseilles, tbh, which is a bit more gritty, more urban than urbane. You'd be far more likely to encounter Sophia Langoustine in Nice than Marseilles. Though she might have something against bouillabaisse.

As a bonus, there were no dildo clowns in the wardrobe.

Reckon Moscow would give that winter experience.  You want to make sure the hotel has heating though..

If you go to Salzburg, you can hop on a (very scenic) train to Zell am See and go up a mountain one day.  It's mostly closed between summer season and the ski season but Dec should be ok.

Venice.
It doesn't smell too bad in Feb.
And is quite magical at that time of year (not overrun by tourists)

Tallinn can be a f*ckr to travel to/from.
