Gay music

Although not in the least bit inclined toward the same sex, I have something of a soft spot for Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy", which has a synth riff on a par with A-ha's"Take on Me", but far more mournful.  The video is a great piece of 80s nostalgia, too, even if Jimmy Somerville looks a bit like Paul Metcalfe of this forum  ;)

Any other openly, brazenly, gay songs you like?

All of the gay music.

Sister Sledge, We Are Family is probably the gayest though.

OK...let's widen it to include all gay anthems then, whether the artist is gay or not.   I'm not sure what the gayest Kylie song is, but "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" has to be up there.  I love it.

I too (not secretly any more) secretly like George Michael and Wham.  Beautifully smooth voice and catchy tunes, what's not to like?

Abba - everything.  (I've never really understood what's gay about Abba, but I'm aware they've been hijacked by gays, along with Kylie!).

That is very excellent, Charlotte, but it doesn't have Andy Ridgely doing a sort of funny mince while he adjusts his tie.

George Michael has the most beautiful singing voice I've ever heard. Even live, it's just smooth and rich and gorgeous, with none of the loss of quality you expect at a live show. I went to his Symphonica tour 2 weeks ago and the beauty of him singing A Different Corner almost reduced me to tears. I love Wham!, they were my teenage years band, but really they were all about the catchy teen pop rather than the wondrousness of his voice.

ETA: I like to think that TimC goes to work looking like George and Andy in their uniforms in that video.

Apart from, very briefly in the early 80s, Ian Ogilvy as The Saint and <cough> Robert Wagner in Hart to Hart.  But they were crime-fighting heroes FFS.

Ah yes.  Well, fair enough then.  If it's any consolation, I had a little thing for Stefanie Powers at round about the same time...

Of course, if you want the *original* gay anthem...

Is 'Sing if you're glad to be gay' by the fabulous TRB too obvious?

Nah, it's just a crap song.

"Go West" is the best Village People gay anthem, I reckon, YMCA's edge having been blunted by too many weddings and cheesy middle-aged birthday parties.  The Pet Shop Boys had better backing vocals (singing miners on the Brits) but Neil Tennant couldn't do the high notes for "I know you love me".

Gay song but not gay video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiuHdUkuRi0

Gay song and gay video

BTW The lyrics for the Communards, "There's more to love (than boy meets girl)" I never realised there was another meaning until a couple of years ago.

Bronski, Communards & Pet Shops all brilliant. The "Smalltown Boy" video is so sad, it was a nightly feature in my favourite club back in the 80's.   I saw Jimmy Somerville at Liverpool uni on his solo tour and was shocked to hear his speaking voice! (Glasgae)

The Banderas were a Communards spin off, though Caroline Buckley & Sally Herbert are both straight. One wonderful album then they vanished.

The Indigo Girls are good, if you like your rock a bit folky, I saw them play twice, as one of the few blokes in the audience that was an odd experience.

Tracy Chapman is brilliant, she is supposed to have had a relationship with Alice Walker, which gives "For My Lover" a very different meaning.

I like lots of gay music but probably the gayest is that Rufus Wainwright sings Judy Garland
