I came across this wonderful example of a shared-use path while riding through Deal yesterday...

The council were even considerate enough to alter the width by a few inches to allow extra leg-room for people using the wider benches...

Other than being fairly busy, it looks quite reasonable.

What's the issue?

From the way it was signposted, and from the entry point from the road, I got the impression that bikes were supposed to be to the left of the line. Thinking about it I'm probably an idiot and it's not a bad path after all (if you like that sort of thing)  :-[

Thinking of this sign?

Oops, my mistake, and proof indeed that I am an idiot. Still, it was a lovely afternoon for a ride  :)

But doesn't that sign mean that bikes have to fly over peds?

The daft thing about the sign in the photo is that it means, if interpreted properly (and in line with the way that other such signs are used), that cyclists have priority over pedestrians.  Which is of course not the case - the exact opposite applies in fact...

It is a sign that is being used more and more often.  I don't know which fool of a civil servant designed it but s/he should be whipped soundly.
