Dartmoor Devil 2014
« on: 22 August, 2014, 05:31:59 pm »
I saw some leaves turning yellow/orange on the trees today, which has prompted the annual entering of the Dartmoor Devil.

A re-run of the 2011 route, however having looked through the routesheet and plotting the route on Google seems to go up a new climb towards Buckland that is not on google maps streetview, nor is it visible clearly on satellite images. It actually isn't even on google maps, but is on Openstreetmaps. I guess this will be a climb from the Pepperdon "s***fest" Hill file.

Who's in?

I don't think it is exactly the same route as 2011, the difference being just after Holne, instead of turning left up that hill towards poundsgate, you now turn right towards Buckland-In-The-Moor. I'm only going from the draft routesheet on the audax calendar listing however.

I've tried to create the route, but this is not a final copy so to anyone popping in for a GPX, I must clarify that this is not the final route, please use at your peril.

Just entered it (9am start)- missed last year due to 'stuff'. Will be coming up from Cornwall with friend as we did in 2010, 11 & 12.

I am considering using my touring bike with 35mm tyres and excellent front Shimano mini v-brake, as I always feel a bit nervous descending those muddy twisty lanes with 26mm slicks and DP brakes. Also the tourer has a 19" bottom gear- but it does weigh about 4kg more than my Equilibrium...

I might have the original GPX for 2011- will have a look later.

EDIT: found the 2011 DD GPX, at a brief glance I cannot see a difference: http://ridewithgps.com/trips/3504679 (apart from the return to Bovey Tracey after the finish being left off this one)

EDIT 2: spotted it, as said new route, if correct, does not go to Poundsgate as per 2011, but up to Buckland

Actually the route sheet I was emailed for this year sends you up through Poundsgate just as in 2011, and not Buckland as per Glover Fan's GPX  ???

No doubt at some point I will be sent out to get the takeaway and at this point I may find myself in the bar of the Cromwell Arms  :demon:

I'm not sure they'll risk sending you out after what happened last time!

The route-sheet has changed. My route is now incorrect, it's now as per the 2011 route.

Not able to do much cycling of late, so what was looking like going into a DD the fittest I have been, I may well find it a struggle.

I'm too fat to do this ride....but I entered anyway.

Hopefully it's fairly flat.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Well one year I did notice a flat section, across Venford reservoir...

Is there a GPX published for this anywhere?  I don't have any time spare to be stopping and reading directions.  I need to keep grinding along.

This is my route from 2011, looks the same to me: BikeRouteToaster

Thanks, I'll use that (although it does look like the route of a very drunken cyclist)
