"Too Drunk To Fuck" by Nouvelle Vague - rocking punk song covered by cutesy French pop group - and it works too!

Awesome! The DK's version of this is one of my favourites. Will the iTunes store have this, I wonder...

iTunes Store does in fact have this. As an aside, the music channel "the Hits" tells me they will be showing "20 amazingly bad cover versions" tonight at 8. Coincidence? I think not!

First one I thought of was the Nick Cave/Bad Seeds cover of (Leonard Cohen's) Avalanche on From Her to Eternity.

It's incredible.

Joe Cocker's version of ' A Little Help From my Friends' is so much better than the original, but then anything would be an improvement.

I do! It's terrible! I have a German colleague who's very much into minimal techno and similar things, and he'd been listening to my music and approving of it all, and then he discovered that I also like Scooter. He's been shaking his head at me ever since.

On that note, I have Nick Cave singing Dress Rehearsal Rag (also L Cohen), from a live concert a few years ago, I think. It's also excellent.

Not really unexpected, but pretty damn fabulous.

Ooh, ooh - my favourite subject!

Somebody beat me to Tatu's unironic version of How Soon Is Now?  :P

The Cardigans, in the early twee phase of their career did Iron Man, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and a sun-drenched and jazzy "The Boys Are Back In Town"

Galaxie 500 did a storming version of the Pistols' "Submission" (good covers band - see "Here She Comes Now", "Listen The Snow Is Falling" and "Isn't It A Pity?")

Similarly, Low are good at this kind of thing - as well as Transmission, they did "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" and an entire set of Misfits songs as an encore (hidden tracks on the box set).

Calexico's mariachi-tinged version of the Minituemen's "Corona"
The Manic Street Preachers's "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings doing Radiohead's Black Star - especially live
Big Black doing Kraftwerk's The Model
Ryan Adams's version of Always On My Mind - or even Wonderwall!

I even like The Cowboy Junkies' version of Sweet Jane, even though they miss out a crucial chord.

I rather liked Tricky's cover of Love Cats (the Cure) from Vulnerable as something a little unexpected.

Most of my favourites have been covered upthread, but a Nick Cave one wot's been missed (IMO) is Plain Gold Ring (Nina Simone, or traditional, I think) off Live Seeds.

Do tell more - I've got the box set but must've missed the hidden tracks...

And Calexico covered Corona?  Wow!  Please tell me where!
