Save The Date!
ACME's Super-Randonneur Medal Ceremony will be held at The Compasses, Littley Green, on Saturday 11th November.
All welcome, whether getting a medal or not, but please let me know.
We will have the use of the 'Green Room' from 18:00, so come early to eat - then we'll kick off presentations at 20:00. If you're doing a DIY, try and fit that into your schedule! I'll be contacting all prospective candidates soon and also need to get the year-bars organised [we still have a good stock of the medals themselves for ESR virgins]. There's also the matter of the 'Helper of the Year' and ACME Points Trophies.
You might want to stay overnight in the pub B&B or camp in the beer garden...
-
And some may qualify with LEL as their 600, instead of The Flatlands, so I may have missed you - get in touch!

Is there a list of counting events for the new season Tomsk?

Is there a list of counting events for the new season Tomsk?
Here is the list of ACME/Flitchbikes calendar events that will qualify for the Essex SR, other rides that originate in Essex such as the Windmill 200 are also eligible. I know there are 100k events listed which don't count in the SR but you may like to ECE them, in which case they can.
NB - Tomsk's rule is that only one perm per Essex SR will be eligible.

Many thanks. A plan begins........... :D

NB - Tomsk's rule is that only one perm per Essex SR will be eligible.
Correction - only one DIY. All Essex perms. are ok and in any combination. I just wanted to encourage riding events. I have allowed a DIY that started in Forrin Parts, but spent much of its time in North Essex, [or Suffolk Borders as estate agents call it].
Other events include the Spring/Autumn Shaftesbury 200s and Herman Ramsey's permanents.

I'm in the states during the preceding week, but I've just sorted out a Friday night flight so at least I'll be physically present. Not be home until early afternoon on the Saturday though, so no DIY considerations for me ... just a wake-me-up jaunt across to the Compasses.
-
Looking forward to this....no DIY for me....it would be irresponsible to ride an Audax after beers...if it isn't an Audax it's fine though.
-
Excellent, looking forward to it, I will be there. Most definitely not riding. Can't seem to be bothered much at the moment...
-
The ceremony is written on the kitchen calendar. I didn't do a 50 or 150 for the grand slam though, but as there's no medal for that, it can wait!
-
I had to use a DIY 400 as my 300, the Flatlands as my 400 and LEL as my 600....I think it works...:)
-
You could just have used LEL as your 300. Fewer substitutions and all that.
-
I should be OK for this caper. I might even be able to drag TCMR and Victoria Pendleton along too
-
I should be there (+1) for the awards ceremony. 38:48 of type 2 fun on the Flatlands + 100 km ECE, the SR felt hard-earned this year.
I can't make the Essex 3Rs so my plan to keep my RRtY alive is a DIY 200 with the Compasses as the arrivée on the 11th.

Any clues?

TCMR = The Current Mrs R aka Kirsty
Victoria Pendleton is TCMR's rather splendid Somersby bicycle purchased for not much money from Halfords. I have to say its a brilliant bit of kit. I have bought K four bikes over the years and this is the only one she's really liked and she has actually ridden it :o

Completing Flatlands on a 38 feet and 48 inch fixed gear would indeed make it challenging ;)

I realised I got the notation completely wrong. :) See you for some gravity dispensed beers!

Plans are afoot to be there with [not so]mini huggy, to be seen if we are on 2 wheels each or sharing 4 wheels.

A while ago some bright spark suggested we organise a WAG's Time Trial with associated betting :demon:

I've just received an acceptance from guests of honour, Herman and Pauline Ramsey. [Green and Yellow, Asparagus and Strawberries - and others - original organiser: 1979!]

Wow! I did not realise there was such a long history to these rides. Great news that we'll have such luminaries, and be interesting to learn more of the origins and evolution.

Fantastic, I`ve ridden all his rides, both calendar and perms, will be good to thank him in person :thumbsup

Man alive. 3 Essex audaxes totalling 2,300 ks and the Richard Ellis Memorial 200 a week after the year end. I need to speak to my secretary.

I feel like I'm in a very exclusive club. I don't have to go through a tunnel of paddles or anything do I?

Thanks Tom! That's five out of five for me, I think
Anyone else?

Hi Tom,
Would I have qualified with the following: LEL, Flatlands, Horsepower+100 ECE, Essex 3 R's+100 ECE ?
Not sure how it works for ECEs, and whether LEL counts as Essex for the purposes of the Essex SR. Having said that, I can't make the awards ceremony as I have something which clashes unfortunately.
Cheers

Looks like you're a 300 or 400 substitute short of the SR :'(
-
Surely LEL can count as 400 and Horsepower with 100 ECE as 300 ?

Doh, ignore me...had a brain fart that the Horsepower is 100km
Bernster,
Looks like you have a valid claim
(Tomsk would not necessarily notice the ECEs without some data mining in to individual member records)
-

It probably just feels like 100km to supreme athletes like yourself.
-
Thanks chaps, wouldn't expect Tom to go digging into everyone's records, he does more than enough with all his organising! Wasn't sure whether ECEs counted either, so that's a bonus - looking forward to adding a 2017 bar to my 2015 medal
In Huggy's defence, I just checked and there is a Horsepower 100k as well, and I didn't specify which version I rode (but it was 200k+100k ECE).
-
In the letter with your Flatlands 600 Brevet Card you should have had a brief note from Tom. It asked you to send him your list of qualifying rides if you thought you had achieved the Essex SR.

You could subject yourself to out initiation if you really want to be part of an exclusive club. Do you have any food allergies.

mmmmh, when is the next full moon ?
-
I need to work out a diy route to the pub from Milton Keynes, timing it so I have a westerly wind there, arrive at near ceremony start time, eat and enjoy a pint before cycling into an easterly wind home!
-
No Essex SR here - managed a 200 (Horsepower), 300 (G&Y), 400 (Arrow from Essex which I think would have counted) but couldn't quite get around to the 600!
I understand that we are still welcome to congratulate those with more staying power, so should see you all on 11th. Planning a DIY with a target arrival time between 18.00 and 19.00 and even provisionally booked B&B to avoid a late night run to Chelmo station. Does anyone know whether the Compasses can produce suitable old fashioned PoP for Luddites to confirm our arrivee? Or if not can Tomsk as an AUK elder just swear an affidavit for us :)

And yes, bhoot, all welcome as always at the 'do'. [I'll be there to meet the Ramseys at 18:00]. I did have to do a bit of digging to find out whether some of the usual suspects qualified - it's much easier to give me a prod to claim. Surprised that our Kentish Man [or Man of Kent, I forget which] Garry King hasn't, though, as Tom J has.
This weekend I aim to email all to confirm arrangements...

I'm now mulling over the idea of doing a 200 DIY to the pub, staying the night somewhere, then doing a 200 home on the Sunday, to save the A road dashes I usually end up doing when Essex bound. Not checked the Compasses availability yet, but I can't afford (got no work booked yet this term) £70 a night on my own, so has anyone already got a twin room there/elsewhere, and wanting to halve the cost? They can PM me or post here.

I think we can find accommodation for you on Saturday night...leave it with me ;)
-
When I went 2 years ago I stayed in the Travelodge on the edge of Great Dunmow - not sure how reasonable prices will be this close to the day. Tomsk even picked me up from there and led me to the venue.
Haven't qualified for a couple of years, though.
-
So far 13 have let me know they're attending. On past form that'll be at least doubled. 30 is about the limit, standing room only, for the Green Room at the Compasses.
-
I`m coming along, there about about 8ish :)
-
Anyone else thinking of a DIY to the Compasses for Saturday? I was looking into a 200K ending around 6:00pm so an early-ish start for a slowcoach like me.
-
I was pondering it, but I think I'll just loop a 100 together and spin round the countryside... I need some recovery this week.
-
I rode a 200 DIY to the ACME awards last year, about 160km there, 40 and a bit back, started just after Midday.
It was good, only problem was getting home and riding by the submitted route. I can`t remember the ride back, somehow it was validated.
-
200km diy there, to arrive 6pm ish. 200km diy home on the Sunday after beer, food and sleep.
-
I`m coming along, there about about 8ish :)
Don't forget The ACME Points Trophy, to award to yourself ;D
The youngest, tallest one has been amusing himself over a two week half-term by making more trophies, by the way...

Somehow I have persuaded the better half to come out for the evening. She's even met some of you before and still wants to come up. So Tom, +1 for dinner please,

-
Have to be back Sunday morning now so the latest plan is: 186 km loop out joining Big Saxon for a bit, then on my own up to Fenstanton then down via Duxford and Thaxted, aiming for 7-7:30 arrival. Food and just one pint then 116 km ride home. All could change by the morning! If not, this will be my first leap up to a 300 DIY.
-

Great news - I'm looking forward to meeting up with another gluten free audaxer!
-
At the moment it's looking doubtful that I'll be able to make it. Senior Junior-WB was 18 on Tuesday and the family's over this weekend to commiserate — I think Mrs WB would be not-best-pleased if I deserted her on the eve of a full trooping of the colour ::-)
Then again, I'm still trying to make it happen, and possibly might even end up on Bikeabilityman's wheel (although more likely the reverse, as I'll be fresher) for a Girton/Cambridge/Duxford/Thaxted run to Littley Green, swift half, and sprint home again
-
Absolute chaos at Orlando airport after people panicked following a lithium battery exploding. I’ll be amazed if I get back to the UK before Sunday.
-

My prophesy turned out correct. Instead of arriving at Heathrow on Saturday morning, the earliest flight gets me back on Sunday morning. All because an exploding lithium battery spooked some folk who ran through security, leading to the cops forcing an evacuation of the gate areas and everybody going through security again. That only took 6 hours!
So unfortunately I’m not going to be able to make the medal ceremony, which is rather gutting as I missed it last year too.

At least it's looking like a tailwind for the ride south!

Will be coming but need to leave sober at a sensible hour to do a DIY ride in the morning. Had scheduled DIY for today but, sadly, had to attend a Nine Night last night and, well, the DIY had to be put back.
What time are the awards likely to happen?

Sorry guys, I don't think I'll be able to make it tonight. Have fun!
-
Me neither — in the end rehanging radiators and fitting new (ceiling) lights trumped the fun stuff.
Have a good evening everyone!
-
Got home ok. I think that was my third Compasses visit, and my first Essex SR Awards evening. Does Tom always pass the bags around for people to help themselves, or was it just that it started late, and he had a long list (although not everyone could make it).
It was good to see familiar, and new, faces. You lot are a real Audax family. I'll have to sign up for another five years!
-

In the past he has shaken hands one by one, but with all that heavy metal being given out (3 x B25,000 awards!) perhaps they seemed like crisps from a packet this year. Which leads me to wonder, what flavour would Essex SR crisps be?
It was a great night, though not having Carl and Raymond meant some of the high achieving siblings were missing, which was a shame. Hermann was a highlight, made it all feel like it had all come from somewhere - and his story means that Green and Yellow must be one of the first and longest running 400s in the uK? Or close to.
Nice that some partners came out too and one at least enjoyed herself a lot. Not enough to want to ride of course.
Thanks Tom&Sons for a nice night.
-
T'was a great night... I screwed up my timing for arrival, so had been there since 16:00  fortunately my beer pacing was a bit better than my road pacing!
A cracking night, great to see everyone - Herman certainly was a star (we also had an interesting conversation about Grayson Perry's house as well)

Looks like it was an entertaining evening. Apart from the long list of SR achievers, is there a list somewhere of who won what?

Yes, that will be on the website ;)

Perhaps we should have a word with the site admin to get it added
