Bagels. Why?
« on: 29 October, 2008, 11:00:34 am »
Another thread reminded me of the existence of these tasteless cardboard hoops.

Why have a bagel when you can have bread? Discuss.
There's no vibrations, but wait.

Bagels just work well with hummus & cucumber.  But they're a bit dry and don't have a nice 'mouth feel', and cream cheese drips out the hole.

But you can get them at silly o'clock. :)

Bagels from supermarkets taste like crap.

Try the Happening Bagel Bakery on the corner of Seven Sisters Road and Blackstock road. They rock.

They're denser than normal bread too.

Worst bagels in the world = those stands on the stations (Ixxy?).  Dreadful rubbery yuck.

We used to get some brilliant bagels from the deli on Moortown Corner.  That doesn't help most people, I know, but there you are. ;)

In spite of my chum Mr Tinson averring that fish and cheese together is Plain Wrong, the smoked salmon & cream cheese bagel is a thing of joy.

Got any tips? Everytime I've tried I've ended up with either soggy blobs or rock-hard hoops.

A good bagel rocks and fills.
I agree with Mr Larrington that a smoked salmon & cream cheese bagel can be a thing of joy.

Oh yes.

We need to do another one of those. Soon.

Actually, salt beef bagels from the place in Brick Lane are lovely at any time. Is it sad to admit that I've got the train down from Luton just to ride there for one? And 60p for tea - bargain.

Bagels were very popular when I rode the Boston Montreal Boston. I thought that they were highly over-rated kack and have never had the unfortunate displeasure in eating one since.
But reading this thread, maybe I was just getting duff bagels?

Used to buy bagels from the late-lamented Swiss Patisserie in Prestwich or Deli-King on Kings Rd in Sedgely Park. Sweetest, most delicious bread EVER.

Sunday morning, haircut at Bernie's (open at 8am. #3 all over and 'Something for the weekend, Sir? Oi! Vey!) Home with bag of bagels and tub of organic cream cheese.

It's not that you don't like bagels, you've just never had a REAL one.

Already  ;D

I'm not at all keen on supermarket / untoasted bagels, but I did develop an addiction to toasted bagels filled with cream cheese when I worked in Archway, opposite the "Mr Bagel" shop.  This was probably more to do with the fact that the guy in there put about half a pound of cream cheese into them than any love of boiled dough snacks.

When I squatted in Hackney in the late 80s there was a 24 hour bagel shop on Northwold Rd

It was there as the factory for a London wide bagel/cheesecake empire was round the back

They did good bagels

Imagine my disappointment when I rode back from LEL in 2005 only to find the shop had closed earlier in the year  :'(

Tasteless? You need to find somewhere that does proper bagels, fresh, maybe with seeds on. I love them and despite living around the corner from Brick Lane, I still can't get enough. Hot salt beef + mustard + red onion is only bettered by Salmon & cream cheese. Yummmmy
