Bacon Sandwich
« on: 05 January, 2009, 11:09:05 pm »
On arrival home after winning the pub quiz tonight #1 son annouced that he'd make the bacon sandwiches.

Red sauce?  No
Brown sauce? No.

He's just presented me with a bacon sandwich with plum jam !!!!  :-\

It is absolutely bloody fabulous.   :P

Any other ideas for bacon sarnies?

Sliced mushrooms sauteed in a little butter and a good squirt of worcester sauce.

It needs to be in the order as laid out below.  Use the big fresh loaves of bread that are scrummy, not square sandwich plastic pre-sliced bread.

Toast
Fried Egg
Sausages
Toast
mushrooms
bacon
Toast.

I am starting to think about breakfast ...
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

We've experimented a fair bit and this seems to be the ideal combination:

Toasted bagel (bottom)
Lo-fat mayo (Adjust amount according to diet)
A few pieces of lettuce
Slices of cucumber
Enough bacon to cover. (Which over here in Canda is 3-4 slices, 1-2 in UK)
Fresh ground black pepper
1 fried egg (both sides, but still runny)
Heinz ketchup
More pepper + salt.
A little Dijon mustard
Toasted bagel top.

Enjoy

Well.  All the above are a bit traditional really.
I was wondering if anyone else had any tips of the more unusual, accompaniments for bacon of the unexpected type.

Tip.  Although I usually have my bacon quite rare, my son presented the bacon and plum jam sandwiches with bacon that was very well done.  It worked really well.

I know marmalade works very well with sausages, so I reckon it would go with bacon as well.
Especially a nice sharp oxford marmalade.

How about something sour, like tamarind or Imli?

I might have to go and buy some bacon now...

Another one that's not really a sarnie, but soak some crumpets in egg with some chilli chopped in and salt and pepper and fry - put on plate topped by bacon and a little maple syrup.

Sliced apple works well in a bacon sandwich.

I'm still with Andy on this, a traditional runny fried egg and bacon sandwich wins out.  Ketchup as well sometimes, depending on my mood.
Actually, it is rocket science.

French toast, but with muffins rather then toast. Sounds yummy.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's recipe for cheddar and bacon drop scones was fantastic.  Far too easy to eat them straight out of the pan.

When frying the baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacon, just before it is done, pour in a light dash of Guinness and as that is sizzling, lob in some gravy powder and vigourously shuffle the bacon round in it.

If it went right, your bacon should look as though you burned it, but thats just the gravy sticking to it.

Serve on white bread, with a fried egg, and retire to somewhee comfy to eat it and sup your guinness.
