Has anyone had any luck making decent bagels at home, or is it impossible without a bagel machine?

Dead easy, haven't done 'em for years, salt, oil and sugar in the water when boiling is the main thing to remember

I'm afraid I just don't get bagels.

You just need to find a Supermarket and put some in your basket.

Much simpler and more enjoyable to visit Brick Lane.  I prefer Beigel Bake to the other place.

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I agree, a bit over-distance for a 300km audax. ;)  OTOH, it's a bit closer for Sgt Pluck.

That reminds me, the bakery and the weekend market in Kew, not too far away, has bagels from Brick Lane.
