Expanded polystyrene which is alleged to be edible.
Why bother?

The Little Duck likes them.

I do, too, in moderation.

Good ricecakes taste nice.

Cheap ones are like expanded polystyrene.

Rice cakes are edible, but why would you?
Because your digestion won't let you eat any other object that can be used as a carrier for spreads, etc.

I'd use a spoon.

I was recommended to take rice cakes on my first 12-hour race, in 1979. With that recipe (included sultanas), they were fine.

Race cakes and marmite- nice low fat snack, IMO.

If you want pucka polystyrene food try prawn crackers ,available at any cheapo Chinese takeaway or popcorn at any cinema.

Prawn crackers have fat and flavour, unlike rice cakes.
Popcorn is expanded polystyrene.

Prawn crackers are truly like polystyrene.  Yuck!  But rice cakes have a nice, fluffy texture.  Sure, they're a bit bland, compared to the crackers I prefer - Ryvita dark Rye, or oatcakes - but it's good to have something softer sometimes.

Rice cakes can be nice!  As long as they are a vehicle for half an inch of humous and a good slab of avocado, or half an inch of cream cheese and some smoked salmon or something.

I'm not fond of the texture of them plain or with marmite, I find you need the half inch of something creamy to make them edible.  This of course defeats the purpose of them as a diet food (although not as a gluten free food).

There are other types of rice cakes though, the type mentioned so far seems mostly made up of air.

I think of them as rice wafers rather than cakes. I quite like them but I prefer bread. Or rice.

Prawn crackers are truly like polystyrene.
Didn't the "Whole Earth Catalog" and one or two other greener American companies actually try using popcorn instead of polystyrene chips as a packing material?

Prawn crackers are nothing like polystyrene. If they are stale, they might be a bit chewy, but they should be crunchy.

Prawn Crackers are brilliant with a good Chilli con Carne, just use em to scoop it up   :)
