Ah yes - Nicholas Kurti, the renowned physicist, specialist in cryogenics - and one of my mentors when I was a lowly student. He it was who demonstrated how to bake an inside-out Alaska in the microwave: frozen on the outside, hot in the middle. Would that work with a modern microwave with its better design more evenly distributed field I wonder?
I remember, back in those days, going to a conference at which Kurti played a leading part, and the lavish conference dinner we were dished up. I recall skipping the dessert and making a hasty exit, I think because I was feeling unwell. I was afterwards told that what I'd missed was - you guessed it - baked Alaska! Presumably the normal type, cold in the middle.
I still haven't tried it.
