Pencil fetish

My mechancal sharpener does different grades of pointyness.  But I think if I was doing soft leads a lot, I would use my knife.

While I'm always in favour of a good sharp knife, what's with all the mechanical sharpener bashing?  Mechanical pencil sharpeners are *fun*, as anyone who ever deliberately broke their lead so they could get up to use the one on Teacher's desk well knows.  Best thing about pencils, those.  If you were lucky, and the teacher was sufficiently distracted, you could make them eat a whole one.

If I owned one, I'd play with it until I'd sharpened away all my pencils.  If I had any pencils.

That's very close, but the wrong blade shape.
If you can find me a Le Thiers with a non-locking, sub 75mm classic narrow blade this shape, I'll gladly give you the wonga for it.  I have no idea why it didn't occur to me before you went.   

Actually, after some further digging, if you spot a Chambriard 'Le Compact' for less than £60-ish that'll do nicely!

And now: Back to pencils...

Mechanical sharpeners?  Pah!

If I'm not using my knife, I prefer a nice sharp hand held sharpener.  Minimal technology that works.

I thought all pencil sharpeners were mechanical.  Or have one of you got a laser sharpener or some magic electrical type.

CTF, you are such a pedant, although I confess I thought the same.  I was using mechanical as a slightly inadequate shorthand in the manner of the OP.

I did laugh out loud at the thought of Kim just turning perfectly good pencils into shavings but can see the attraction.

Mechanical pencils FTW!

Absolutely. Pentel P207 for preference, though the non-retractable lead sleeve is a bit delicate if you're not careful and the barrel's a bit skinny. The Faber-Castell Grip is very good too.

Lamy Scribble. My most used piece of writing equipment, and it's not a fountain pen .



I also have wooden pencils by Staedtler, Berol and Rexel and mechanical pencils by Lamy, Pelikan, Yard-O-Led, Conway Stewart, Parker, Burnham and probably a few others.

I love pencils, but I hate ballpoints.

Whats the general feeling on rubbers?

I used to like them, but of course like them to be nice and new, but now most of the pencils I find have had the rubbers used up by my 10 year old daughter who cant be bothered to find a rubber.

My Grandad used his Dremel to cut the icing on his birthday cake one year as it was so hard that it was cracking when attempting to cut the cake with a knife.

Sadly we have been unable to track one down before our pending departure. had I realised earlier it would have been a breeze.
