Title: Mid-Essex Epiphany Extravaganza 06/01/2024
Post by: Tomsk on 30 November, 2023, 09:57:14 am
In consultation with Josser, we've booked the Spiritual Home for Saturday 6th January 2024, so for once the Epiphany Extravaganza is on the actual day itself.

We just need a Supremo to organise a route, breakfast/elevenses/lunch/afternoon tea venues ... who is destined to continue the legend? It could be you!

Tentative idea to organise?

Start Battesford Court
Elevenses at Hyacinth Tea Room Greenstead Green
Lunch Bell Panfield
Tea Bishop Nick Brewery
Evening at The Compasses

Details to be thrashed out obviously, but it will involve some COR.

Vague route below, any good?

Sounds very good, thank you Epiphany supremo.

I would be tempted to cut out the gratuitous ascent of TMNH and make it a more direct route to Coggeshall.  55k is quite a bit for Epiphany, particularly as EVERYONE will be carrying camping gear - apart from that guy that leaves his stuff in the back of his car at the Compasses.

A traditional Epiphany with proper dress code (ie Josser in his stag do outfit, black tie in the evening, twin set and pearls for OD and some poor sod in a filthy reindeer outfit) would be ace.

If you are going to chuck in the byway to Nunty's you should really do the full house and include the fabulous Ambridge Road byway

Now there's a thought - perhaps it should be recce'd beforehand though - Ambridge can get very gloopy. It's a seasonal byway I think, but farm vehicles do use it. I don't know Nunty's, but looks a logical route to Greenstead Green. I've had a look at rights of way and the track through Markshall is just a footpath, despite what RwGPS says. I know there were plans a while ago to make a cycleroute to Earls Colne, so my OS map may be out of date?

Yes sounds like a nice reccy for a weekend ride for tea and a sarnie at Greenstead.   I generally ride it heading back from Greenstead directions so the following is in reverse.

The bit through from Nunty's Lane is hard pack but with a binder of mud, so can get a bit wet with puddles, esp if the logging vehicles have been through there. There's a right turn to the section from Little Nunty's Farm which is concrete pad from memory, at this right turn, there is a gate and concrete pad towards Markshall (I think there's a café there but never been yet), then there is a similar hard pack but with a binder of mud for a section before it spits you out on to course aggregate leading to asphalt for the run down to teh A120. Crossing needs some patients to get a safe gap and then it's an old asphalt road in to Coggeshall, it can be quite wet as the fields drain down it, so if it's cold enough to freeze, then I expect it will be an ice ring!

I would strongly recommend giving the byway at Clavering Farm a miss however, it is a quagmire in the summer let alone in winter and chewed up by 4x4 action.

Are we happy with the vague concept though?

as a semi-regular user of the A12 psyclepath, how about avoiding it with a bit more COR?

fork R @ TRL opp Eastways estate
soon R onto Lt Braxted Ln
L along what looks like a driveway to skirt the S of that pond and finish up on Braxted Rd where
it's large-ish gravel.  green dotted line on map, opp blue dotted line
R @ T and over R Blackwater
next L @ tri
next L again into Kelvedon on Maldon Rd
rejoin original route by the Angel

Oh if we are adding more COR why not some Alpacas too?!?! :)
In Kelvedon, left back towards A12, right on to Cranes Lane and then up Snivellers Lane on to Park Gate Road, R onto Woodhouse Lane to then follow the bridleway to pick up Cuthedge Lane

Do we have any more takers for the day, I’ll need to let Bishop Nick know how many are coming, plus who wants to wear the reindeer pelt?

Ok, barring zombie attacks or a bout of CBA I will shimmy down to ‘spoons in time for a Full Mid-Essex and accompanying pint(s) and take it from there.

I will be astride BJ the Fixie and won’t be camping cos some of my kit is in the boat and I can’t be arsed to rip the winter cover off.

I haven't had time to assemble my kit so I am not camping.

Aiming to join Huggy's peel off.

Non COR Route:

Amended COR Route (to avoid ford on Boarded Barns Road):

Who's riding what?  I am 50/50 but suspect non COR given how much rain there's been but could be convinced to deploy the gravel bike..

OK - that has potential.... but isn't that bit at Bardfield 36km quite rutted? (granted it was quite a long time since I rode it, but I couldn't turn the pedals the ruts were so deep!

Bagman wont fit on the fixed without obscuring the rear light so it'll be J.ack with tailfin and gears as I am too tired to feck around sorting bikes anymore! I'll take a view on COR when we get there.

I'm out - beaten by logistics and lack of fitness.

HNY all.

I promise to make more of an effort on Wednesdays.

I enjoyed the pics, you all looked like you had a good time.
I note that there is a second Pelt of Destiny, I hope this is because of a recent purchase rather than mitosis being made possible by lack of laundering.  ::-)

The second Pelt was a monkey suit.  The original Pelt is still going strong, it was first worn in 2012!

Ive watched everything ever broadcast by Sir Attenborough, and I never realised how similar monkeys and reindeer are.

ACME is truly an educational experience

Reindeers and monkeys are 99% the same DNA.

 Thanks to all for a splendid day out, especially Josser for organising and sussing out just-about-rideable COR.

A brewery stop at Epiphany is definitely an 'Annual' thing now.

I had a great day.
Thanks to Josser for organising and to everyone who came out.
Most relaxed enjoyable day on a bike in ages.

The Musky Pelt of Destiny is currently airing before being stored away for the next 12 months. Who will get to wear it next year I wonder !!!!  ;D ;D ;D
