TfL Code of Conduct Video advice
« on: 23 July, 2010, 05:00:19 pm »
I'm concerned about some of the content in the Transport for London Code of Conduct video released in conjunction with the launch of the cycle hire scheme.

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/15875.aspx

At about 38 seconds it deals with the subject of passing HGVs.

I fear that an inexperienced cyclist could interpret the animation not as a warning of what not to do but an illustration of how to ride in the presence of large vehicles. The eye isn't drawn to the red cross on the opposite side of the screen to the cyclist and the animation doesn't actually show the cyclist passing the lorry but stopping in the killing zone. I don't think it's inconceivable that someone could copy this animation in the belief that it was the correct thing to do.

Is it just me or do others find it worrying?
A world of bedlam trapped inside a small cyclist.

Hmm, I think it's quite clear...

She's trying to use the feeder lane to get to the ASL, she doesn't completely stop, but doesn't get to the ASL before the lights change and the lorry turns left across the front of her.

"You know you should never pass large vehicles on the inside at junctions."
"Yes please" said Squirrel "biscuits are our favourite things."
