Not a caption: do modern fixies have foot-rests on the forks?  Or are those lighting mounts?

AIUI, time trialists many years ago would train and cycle to an event on a heavier, more durable set of wheels, and switch to a lighter set of wheels and tires for the actual event. The race wheels were attached to the fork fixtures for the ride to and from the starting point of the race. Can someone verify this?

As a young kid I remember cyclists who appeared to have wheels hanging from their handlebars. (I know now that they weren't).
No idea how they were actually fixed.

Wheel carriers attached to the forks were A Thing.  You carried your tubular-shod race wheels on them and swapped over for the time trial.

Those are footpegs on the fork blades.  Wheel carriers were cranked brackets mounted to the axle of the front wheel, the rims of the extra wheels being strapped to the handlebar.

Ahem - not that long ago.....

Wheel carriers looked like bent spanners - one end attached by the wheel nut on the front wheel, the other end attached by the wheel nut on the wheel being carried. The toe straps round the wheel and handlebars added stability.
Often the best wheels had wheel covers.
Then you needed to remember to carry a real spanner to set up at the start or HQ.
