These clouds were overhead:



Any explanation as to how they were created?

I think those are ice crystals at high altitudes, blown by the winds.

The wiki article says:

Cirrus uncinus clouds are hooked and are the form that is usually called mare's tails.

And although it's not clear from the photo they are hooked.
