As a contrast to Nutty's thread...

... what are you doing with all your tomatoes?

Today I made soup:

Collected the ingredients from allotment

The potato wouldn't fit in the colander

Peeled the tomatoos by plunging into boiling water for a minute then into cold.

Chopped potato & onion, crushed garlic clove, de-seeded and halved chilli.

In my biggest saucepan, I sweated off onion, garlic and chilli in olive oil

Removed garlic (I don't like it strong) and added potato for a minute.

Added veg stock to cook potato while I peeled the toms

Added tomatoes, some herbs (Didn't have any fresh Basil  >:() and a squidge of tomato puree to give moar colour.

About half an hour's simmering later, I fished out the chilli and most of the herbs, blitzed it until most of the lumps disappeared and seasoned it with salt & pepper.

Result: Tasty tomato soup for dinner

With a few litres more for the freezer.

All the fresh ingredients grown by me.  :smug: :smug: :smug:

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

If this was one of Nutty's threads, they wouldn't be drops of water on it.  :P

We have a bumper crop on the go, and will be doing something similar, BUT instead of peeling the toms, I just seive the stuff when cooked, removes all the skins and is much quicker!

In my youth I used to volunteer on a rare breeds farm in the south of France - did so on and off for about 5 years before and throughout uni.  We never quite achieved our aim of growing 100 tomato plants in the garden, but came close a few times.  I used to go and pick the ripe ones by the wheelbarrow-load!

That soup looks good.  Maybe I should make soup for tea....

Another good thing I found about making a soup like that is that you can also use it like passata in tomato based recipes (bolognese sauce etc) much better, and cheaper than buying it.

Looks tasty. What impresses/befuddles me is that you had time and space, and presumably reasonably clean hands, to photograph as you were cooking!

A few years ago a did a job for a nice old lady, who gave me a jar of tomato jam.  It was delicious.  I've never seen it anywhere since.
