DDR400 RAM

Dad's computer, as noted a few weeks ago, is running XP Home on 512MB of RAM. I think this could do with increasing.

Opening the machine up reveals two slots, one with 512MB in it, one empty.  The memory is marked DDR400 512MB.

Do I have to match the contents of both slots (get another 512MB)? Or can I put a GB in one, leaving 512MB in the other?

Are all RAM manufacturers created equal?  Do I just have to match the spec (DDr400)?
