Polling collective wisdom on which home insurance provider is best for including bikes these days.
I used to use M&S, seems they're still good for large collections of sub £1000 bikes but anything over that hits a 5% surcharge which is unworkable for a tandem collection.
I just got a quote from https://pedalcover.co.uk/ (a broker) which seems far more reasonable, wondered if anyone had experience with them?

Got a policy, terms seem reasonable, premium also. Fortunately, not had to claim so can't comment on that.
Seem to understand cyclists.

Also looking, found some recommendations for the TSB, who offer bike cover as a separate policy or as part of a home contents one.  Just had a play on the bike quote one and it's around 30% cheaper than the CO-OP who I'm with presently

Since we're having an insurance thread, PSA that many insurers weasel out of covering bikes with electric assist.

I thought quotes Pedal Cover gave me for my three bikes were way too expensive.

Been using Pedalcover for the past 2/3 years, cost is half what John Lewis was charging.

Never insured bikes separately, premium is usually about 10% of value of bike, better to save the money towards an eventual replacement.

I also thought Pedalcover premium was good value. It’s for building and contents though, not just the bikes.  And it covers my photo equipment too.

The quote I got from pedal cover was excellent.

Another HUGE advantage is that they do not specify what kind of lock to use. So I can lock my not exactly cheap bike with a cafe lock and be covered. No need to lug a gold standard lock around that other insurers demand.

Never had to claim though so can’t comment re that aspect.

We have (unlimited) house and contents insurance with pedalcover. It's about half the cost of the equivalent (no longer available) M&S cover. We could potentially be underinsured on possessions if we were cycle touring with full camera and laptop setup (IIRC there is a 10k valuables limit when not at home). They were happy to discuss the required level of cover and explain how their offering works. They get low premiums by having a large excess (ours is £500 I think), but if you're happy to self-insure to this level, then they offer a good deal. The insurance is actually with Axa (may be different for others), but we are supposed to go via pedalcover in the event of a claim (I guess they are more used to handling unusual bike-related issues with the agent rather than the general public).
We haven't had to claim yet, so can't comment on that side of it, but I'm sure the interwebs would be full of tales of woe if they weren't up to scratch. I'm happy to recommend them thus far.

Very useful info here, thanks! Looks like pedalcover.co.uk are worth  considering seriously then.
I saw they'd quoted £600 excess, but then added on £50 pa charge for "excess protection plan" which pays out the excess for you (and on the car policy too) which effectively reduces it to zero. Interesting idea.

Another vote for Pedalcover. Excellent personal service on initial quote, then on revising and taking it up a year later, and finally on renewal this summer. Better cover and £200 cheaper than our previous insurer.

No claims experience, but the underwriter is AXA - I think they were the underwriter when we made a (smallish) claim on a different policy a few years ago, and were perfectly reasonable.

On balance, I think next year we'll accept the higher excess (£350 for us, I think) but ditch the excess protection policy - for us it's £55, with a max payout of £600, but terminates after any claim. It does, though, effectively create what would be my preferred model for insurance - a high(ish) minimum claim, but no (or minimal) excess once you're over that threshold - we'd be happy to self-insure up to probably £1k or so in exchange for a lower premium, but would prefer a full payout if we were going to make a claim.

(Realistically, if you've got an excess of £350 as we have, you're not going to make a claim for £400. It's not worth the likelihood of increased premiums in the future unless you're going to get a cash payout of £400 or £500 as a minimum, probably more, so the minimum claim we're likely to make is knocking on a grand in any case.)

Yes, it is quite a good idea. It is only one-shot though, so a bit of a bugger if you need to claim twice in a year! I am considering not taking the excess protection insurance next time, given that the last time I claimed on home insurance was when we were burgled in 1995. I don't have an issue with a large excess, and consider insurance as cover against a total loss type incident (house burning down, cleaned out by a burglar, that sort of thing). But then again, we're quite lucky in that we have savings and could survive a loss of several hundred pounds,so we can take that risk.
