Does anyone rate Decathlon or Halfords luggage??
« on: 16 February, 2018, 07:23:51 pm »
[I know - odd question ... but I have Reasons. Too tortuous - and boring - to relate here.]

Has anyone bought any bike luggage from these 2 stores that they'd haeartily recommend?

More specifically; saddle-or-bar bags of "medium" size. Bigger than the toolkit+tinyjacket size, but smaller than a typical Carradice. But any suggestions welcome while you're here :)

Decathlon bar bags look decidedly budget. Halfords seem to major on Topeak, some bargains to be had from what I can see.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

If 2.5l is medium I can recommend the Decathlon saddle bag of that size. If you mean a bit larger please ignore!

Used the old style version of the Decathlon bar bag and found it excellent on short and long rides including PBP and LEL.  Not waterproof but use a light dry bag or plastic bag.

And next time I visit Decathlon I'll probably buy one of these:

The old version of the small Decathlon bar bag is a long distance cycling classic because it is well designed in size, shape and accessibility.  I have one, which I've used on PBP and TCR, and I saw plenty of others.  I recall Kristof used to use one but he has now upgraded, possibly in conjunction with his sponsors.

It never pretended to be waterproof - you just put stuff that needs to stay dry in plastic bags (Top tip for Ortleib pannier obsessives!).  It doesn't seem to be available any more but there is a Roswheel version which is very similar (I have it too).
