Posting reference numbers

Is there an option to show forum post numbers within  threads? I have looked but cannot find one.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you literally want to number posts, or just be able to link directly to a specific one? If the latter, copy its URL from the title of the post (not the thread).

They're enumerated in the URL for each post (eg. this one is 2270184), but that appears to be a forum-wide numbering rather than a message-in-thread, so of little interest to humans.

If I wanted to refer to drossall's post above, I'd just provide a link to it.

Only if you've got it set to display 25 posts per page.  It's a configurable option.  IIRC I've got it set to 50.

Yes, kids, it's been there all the time.  Can someone now either please tell salesforce.com about this useful feature or inform me how to turn it on for Salesforce case comments

Post numbers are displayed in Tapatalk. However, you’re not helping your audience by asking them to be flicking back and forward through the thread to follow your argument. Most of the time, I probably wouldn’t bother going back to read an earlier post just because you can’t be bothered to quote it.

I think it is better to quote the (relevant parts of the) post because if someone comes back and deletes a post or two all the subsequent posts are re-numbered.
