Macbook Pro display problem

I wonder if any of the YACF Mac users could help a lowly PC user ;)

My sister's MacBook Pro4.1 is a thing of beauty but... it displays pictures badly.  Photo's uploaded from a camera or viewed on Flickr etc have an extremely 'blocky' appearance to them.  This is particularly noticeable on large areas with subtle changes in shade - they just aren't subtle.  On a PC I would suspect that the colour pallette was set too small. I have checked that the display is set for 'Color LCD' and 1440 * 900 but on a Mac I just don't know what to do next.

Sounds like aggressive jpg compression? What size are the files in KB, and in pixels?
It is simpler than it looks.

...is the correct answer !

I think that the small selection that I looked at were indeed a bit too jpegged.

Further investigation produced a "They aren't all like that"  -  and indeed they aren't. ::-)

Thanks for the reply and apologies for wasting your time.
