Sounds like a plan Mike.

What time are you planning to get to Kettlewell?

I'm contemplating a route from Hull, but much will depend on the weather near the time. Another option is train to Darlo. And I'm considering whether studded tyres will be needed. The excitement is growing!

The excitement has just evaporated for me, I'm afraid: I have just found out that work has planned a Christmas concert for the Friday.  I was so looking forward to it.  Now it's third time unlucky.  Have a lovely time but spare a thought for me listening to a bunch of young guitarists murdering Deck The Halls!

I was at the computer, just about to book my train tickets when I found out - at least this time I won't be wasting the tickets!

Probably aim for about 1200, leaving home at 9ish and reckoning on 3 hours for 37 gentle miles.

Plan then to head up Littondale and over the tops to Garsdale Head and creep up on the Inn from behind so to speak. Of course, a more direct route is possible via Fleet Moss reverse, Buttertubs and up Stonedale. May be time and light dependent, though I do have lights.

Expecting to head home by rolling down the dale to Grinton, over to Letburn then Middleham, Masham, Grewlthorpe, Kirby Malzeard, Ripon and back roads home.

Mike

I've now booked a return to Darlo - on the basis that I'm going to go home from Darlo so might as well have a ticket to get there. So - depending on the weather I'm riding from Hull or riding from Darlo. This week I'm returning the touring paraphernalia to my bike - is it possible to do a 200km DIY as part of my RRtY and also carry all my camping gear?  Hmmm... I may just catch the train to Darlo and sleep in the bunkroom. At least I know that I won't be disturbed by anyone's snoring in the bunkroom or the tent.

I don't think I'm going to be able to make this. Just can't take the time away from work. Will say if anything changes but I can't see it changing. Plus no time to go cycling so riding fitness is dwindling completely.

Well put it this way - it's 11pm, I worked from 8 - 5:30, got home at 7, had dinner with MrsC, since then I've been sat in front of a computer working & swigging rum, listening to Tom Petty. Still have a fair bit to do before I can go to bed.
That's a pretty typical day atm and weekend are similar. The new owner wasn't kidding when he said 16hour days.

Unfortunately me too. Two pitches in one week is too many...

Ah that's a shame, Mike and Steve, but I hope you both enjoy your days at work.

Here in Darlo it's been pissing down and now it's icing over...

I'm also looking at train assist. The only question now is: Ancient touring bike with Vittoria Randonneur tyres, or MTB with Schwalbe studded snow tyres?

York was black ice this morning, even at 3C, so I think snow studs would be advisable for tan hill.

Wish I was going but I'll be working all weekend again.

I'm pretty frustrated actually - was looking forward to seeing you all.

Will try for third time lucky in the spring and look forward to pics on Sunday. Enjoy all.

Job for tonight: fitting studs on the front and wide rubber on the rear.  I'll look forward to seeing any of you who survive the trip!

I only have 26" studded tyres. And the bike they fits is single speed - I'm not taking that up there. Off road ftw. (Crosses fingers)

Set off from Northallerton, very icy back roads as far as the A1... Then the North wind and rain did start... Smiled at every motorist who passed me. Currently enjoying a pint of Ringwood XXXX Porter at the Bridge Inn in Grinton. Beautiful log fire to dry my toes. Gammon and egg cooking. Mind you, the sun is now shining outside, so I guess I'm missing the nice weather. No doubt it'll rain when I leave.

Having said that... The food here is good and they have rooms. What does Tan Hill have to offer that I don't have sat here. Fire, beer, food, bed... Oh wait. I know. Friends... Looking forward to hearing everyone's adventures when we meet later.

Next question for me is... Arkengarthdale or Muker/Keld.
