Auto route help for 400km
« on: 07 April, 2008, 11:06:23 pm »
Hi anyone with a copy of Autoroute that can check my event please.
I am organising the Invicta 400km this year, last year when I rode it and others the general consensus was that at 423km it was overdistance despite being billed as 403km.
I have altered the route slightly to improve it avoiding the Ashford dual carriageway and elsewhere to shorten it but officially is that to much?

Here are the controls and grid references;
Start Chiddingstone Causeway TQ 51803 46555
Peasemarsh village hall            TQ 88158 23230
 Lewes, Tesco 24hr garage       TQ 41944 10519
 Westmeston info               TQ 33819 13654
Outwood Green info          TQ 32715 45535
Chiddingstone Causeway          TQ 51803 46555
Harrietsham info                 TQ 87788 53826
Sittingbourne, Pheonix house    TQ 90608 63786
Reculver info                       TR 21130 68007
Stowting info                      TR 13373 44296
Bliby                          TR 02655 37475
Bethersden, Village Hall             TQ 93027 40045
Finish Chiddingstone Causeway TQ 51803 46555

The red one is where the route is going due to a road blockage but I can add an info if neccessary.
cheers
 Steve

Mapsource makes it 393km given the waypoints you specify.

B*11*cks  Oh well I may just have to leave in the long bit, it's a shame because actually having ridden it it is over distance :-\

PLEASE IGNORE THIS POST AS IT IS NOT HELPFULL TO YOU

I've just proved to myself how useless AR2007 really is for bike route finding.

It also has quite limited road control.  Setting M/Ways to slowest, and M/Ways to be avoided and major to be limited access and choosing Shortest then distance is 383k.

I really must reinstall MapSource tomorrow and then send for the latest version.

On AR-05 it comes up with 419km on the quickest route settings and 375km on the shortest route settings.

Just to throw another result into the pile, I get 381km using AR '07 and shortest route between nodes.

viamichelin works OK but it only allows 2 stopovers; you have to do it in several bites.

www.viamichelin.com

it gives
159km Chid- Outwood
83km Outwood - Sittingbourne
95km  Sittingbourne -Bethersden
51km Bethersden -Chid

388km total

selecting shortest route by bike via the other places mentioned in the OP but not Bliby as it's never heard of it. I would imagine that would be accepted as nobody's going to make up a new route far less ride down the London bound A21 just to avoid 12km

If you make the control Rye instead of Peasmarsh, then Mapsource gives 399k
Rye Harbour instead gives 404k

I think Peasmarsh is a proper hall control (was when I rode it in 2002)

wan't sure about the Peasmarsh hall for the new improved "does not go to Winchester Tescos outside at 0300" version; I understand the version I rode is no longer viable due to requiring 5 manned controls (Peasmarsh, Ringmer, Chichester, Cranleigh, Wrotham/ Chiddingstone) and was done specially for the CTC National 400 (which I've not heard about since Pam's in 2004)

Actually.......

The ride was a big loop from 96-99.   I organised for the first time, as a qualifier, in 99 and it was really hard work having that many 'manned' controls.   It was also quite expensive to run.   It is by far my favourite route, though.

I changed the route to a figure of eight in 2000 as it was easier to co-ordinate and we could o hot food at the half-way point and still get some sleep.   It was a bit cheaper to run as it required less halls.

The big loop was resurrected, briefly, in 2002 for the National, before returning to a figure of eight route.

We used to control at the Stand Cafe in Rye, but they decided to shut half way through the control once, so we moved up the road to Peasmarsh for the 2002 version.   The route in and out is a bit better/quieter and we have a group of volunteers down there.

the National 400 in 2004 was Pam's; I rode it, as did MV and Pam made a little speech beforehand. The 2002 was yours.

You see....too many years of doing this and your memory goes.   Have edited the post above.

2002 was my first 400 on fixed :)

I'll put Reculver back to last years spot TR 22595 69317 that should have it the same as before at 403km officially

It's a shame when I rode it and others it comes out around 420km

That makes it 394km on Mapsource.  :P

With a bit of manual tweaking for the shortest route, it comes to 384km  :-[

Sorry, no access to AR as I'm in London for a few days. However, I'm sure Andy would help.

I seem to remember that my second National 400 was in Kent. 1994? Was that anything like the current event?

1994, the National 400 started in Royal Tunbridge Wells. We headed the carnival as we set off. There were banners in the towns because of the visitation of the 1994 Tour De France.
It was a double looped route with a return to event HQ at night. I don't remember the day section very well, but the night/early morining section followed the A259 along the Romney Marshes through to Hastings. Routewise, that's all I remember.

Also, if you don't know it, there is a good cafe in Rye. The Corner Cafe. I had a mixed grill there in 1996 for my breakfast on a late season 200. I had ridden a 400k perm to the start, so had a bit of an appetite.

They're OK if you have a small group, but get a bit 'overwhelmed' with bigger numbers.   Our 300k goes there on Saturday so we can get another review.

;D I've found an old 2002 version in the loft, having set the points in and checking the route I can see where the route actual goes wide of the Autoroute so I can now see where I have to tweak or add info controls

Oh, and last years was well over 200km over distance.    Just how did you get me out for the second half?
