I've seen weather forecasts and decided (for me) it would be foolhardy to go anywhere by car.

We had a fair bit of communication before setting off for Maidstone yesterday morning, as snow had been forecast for Thursday night. The test was whether my s-i-l could set off for work (35 mile drive to Blackheath starting at 6am). There had been no snow, either there or in Southend, so we set off. At that stage, the forecast was for rain later on Friday. When we actually set off home at about 8.15pm, the temperature had dropped rather more than was predicted.

I think by many drivers' standards it was all OK - most of the lorry drivers were staying around the 50-60mph mark, which I thought was much too much for the conditions. My biggest problem was following the while lines, which on the hard shoulder were becoming obscured by snow, and especially hard to see in the bits where there were no streetlight. The road surface was pretty much OK - a bit of slush in places - but the visibility was the biggest problem.

I do tend to avoid driving when the conditions are anything less than ideal.

We've had the annual BMW falling to get up the hill.
I'm not going anywhere.

I remember Rogerzilla offering me some wheels with winter tyres. I thought to myself:
"I don't think I'd ever use them?"

Forecast to be -10°C in Hampshire tomorrow morning.  That's the temperature when road salt loses its effectiveness.

After -7C on  Wednesday night there was just a beautiful hard frost. Last night we did have some snow but only about an inch and has mostly melted now. BORING! Ryedale seems to be ignoring winter so far :(

Where we are the snow has pretty much gone. There wasn’t a huge amount anyway.15 miles away in Bruton there’s about 8 inches. A lot still there.

Almost all gone here but my son and his friends managed to find a sheltered patch outside the Apple store and have a snowball fight. They got reprimanded by a security guard.

It does look wonderful. But I confess I'd have gone for boots over tyres in those conditions.

FTFY.  Was still around 8" deep, so alright unladen, but the front just sank in and stopped when riding.

Walked back up the way you came and down the other side of the undergrowth on the left?

Mountain bike tyres are like Velcro on snow, not so hot once it has compacted or thawed and refrozen into ice.

Not that cold here, a dusting of snow overnight made our lane slippery (Disco on road tyres).

Audax was consistently 0.3-1.7C by Garmin 800, but the wind was absolutely cutting.  Having been home since 5pm, my ears are still cold, even though I had a skullcap under my helmet.  My feet were almost thawed after an hour of land rover binary heating

I just looked at the forecast for tonight/tomorrow: -9°C in Saarfend!  :o

A work of fiction I'm afraid. I confused Saarfend, Essex, with Southend Argyll & Bute.

Having looked at the image full-size in a new tab, there is something in the shadow of the bank, level with where the trail of footprints stops, which might indicate disturbed snow.

So my hypothesis is that iddu simply took a shorter route off the trail to get where he took the photographs.

Now I eagerly await a post from iddu saying I'm wrong as well.  ;D
