Will pigeons eat my tomatoes?
« on: 21 May, 2011, 09:06:04 pm »
I've never grown toms outside before but have just spent the day preparing a very weed-ridden bed and planting out 12 good size plants.

I'm sure that I was heading indoors I saw a fat woody eyeing them up. It's probably the same woody that ate all of my broccoli and cabbages but it hadn't occurred to me that they might go for the toms as well.

So what do you reckon? Do I need to rush out and buy some netting or are woodies not into toms as much as they are into brassicas?

The pigeons round here appear not to have touched or toms, Local pigeons are HYOOGE and probably prefer the chicken and chips which plaster the pavements to low-calorie toms...

They do like brassicas but not tomatoes in my experience.

In my experience at the allotment anyway. They may eat them out of dropped kebabs.

I'm pretty sure they won't touch the leaves of tomatoes or potatoes. They are in the same family as the nightshades and are probably at least very unpleasant.

I don't think you'll have a problem with birds attacking the fruit either.
