The Jetsetter 200. New for 2019
« on: 22 March, 2019, 12:41:50 pm »
A shameless plug for the first Audax organised by Finsbury Park Cycling Club. Traditionally a racing club established since 1883, we've got plenty of history of organising Time Trials, Road Races and Reliability rides. In the past few years several members have ridden lots of Audaxes including LEL, Mille Pennines and plenty of shorter events. We thought it time we stepped up and organised an event.

The Jetsetter is on 25th May and is based out of Potters Bar just North of London. The HQ is five minutes from the M25, not much further from the A1 and has a station very close with quick trains from London and Cambridge. It's also pretty easy to cycle out to from London.

It's a pleasant route best described as rolling and would be an ideal first 200 with no major hills and plenty of places to refuel along the way.

Very excited for this, managed to convince a few Audax newcomers to sign up so it should be a bit of a cracker!

Looks interesting. Also passes within a mile or two of the Duxford Air Festival.

Instead of going down the A603 if you go up to Arrington there is a cycle track that takes you through the grounds of Wimpole Hall, you can turn right at the other end and across A603 to Orwell.  A scenic alternative (not the hilly scenic) on far quieter roads.

Doesn't look like I'll be able to make the date but certainly interested if you hold it again next year.

I've ridden with The Park a couple of times and been on their Reliability Ride.  They're a nice, friendly bunch and the RR was well organised.  I imagine this will be very bit as good.

Or, after Guilden Morden, continue on unclassified roads through the villages of Steeple Morden, Litlington, Bassingbourn and Meldreth to reach the control at Shepreth?  (caveat: I've not ridden them, I'm only looking at the OS map)

For info, the shop in Dane End (183km) has been revamped and has new owners, and is now open until 9pm on Saturdays, I believe it may even have a coffee machine soon...

also if you don't fancy the drag up the A602 just after Dane End you can turn left at Sacombe and head past the church on the right, through the grounds of Sacombe house on a bridleway (about 200m unmade but rideable, the rest on a posh driveway), that'll keep you off the busy road and you can cross straight over towards stony hills.

Yeah those roads are fine to ride on, infact by going this way you actually go past another airfield between Guilden Morden & Littlington, which has a pretty cool memorial with a large plane propellor.

Any news on the route?

An email went out last night to all entrants with GPX, route sheet and event details. We did the route check on Saturday and it’s all looking good. There’s literally a couple of places left available if anyone wants a ride next weekend.

I see there's now an F-15 at Duxford; good thing Sunday only or else I would be very late back!

Got one of the last tickets - good job there's no dynamic pricing. Just connecting flights to be arranged.

Had a go at marking the controls on the GPX based on the routesheet, since what was emailed out didn't seem to have any. Here's my updated copy if anyone finds that useful. Own risk, no guarantees etc.

What a terrific ride. Chapeau to the organisers and volunteers for putting a business class brevet with five star weather to boot.

I've also never seen an audax done as a hen do with a bottle of champagne at the arrivée before, which was a great first!

Cracking ride! Couldn't find the start so was firmly at the back of the field with newcomer Nadjie on her 2nd 200. Loved the aviation theme especially at the start, Luton runway was a brilliant control. Old Warden was fascinating never seen an autogyro flying before. Managed to cop two American warbirds Jet Provost and Strikemaster pair at Duxford without stopping, going back there today *. Definitely a sting in the tail with the three sisters after Dane End.

Thanks Joff and your helpers

* and copped two F-15s my Holy Grail

What a fantastic ride!  I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and came in as lantern rouge.

Being local, I know those three hills in the last 15k, and elected to take a slightly different route.  In my case, from Hertingfordbury, I went through Letty Green and Essendon.  It is still hilly, but not so steep.  I really hope this one is in the calendar for next year, and not only because it is so easy for me to cycle to the start.  Whilst there were a couple of busy roads on the ride, and the usual share of bad surfaces, they were more than balanced out by some absolutely dreamy roads.  Unfortunately, I forgot to put sun cream on my legs.  A mistake for which I am now paying.  Lesson learned.

Many thanks to the organiser and all the helpers.

I'd like to congratulate the organisers on this ride. In my view, nothing could have been better. It was great to have filter coffee and a wide range of food before starting. I particularly appreciated the welcoming committee on my return; great to have people outside by the bikes to ensure that none of the locals would have any opportunity to help themselves - no disrespect to Potters Bar, it can and does happen anywhere.

Although I don't need gluten free or vegan options, it was good to see that the organisers catered for these needs.

And as for the person setting us off who said he was not used to public speaking, you did well! Very clear instructions in the email and at the start.

No problems with the gpx file, greatly appreciated.

I'd like to add my thanks to Joff and all the organising team and helpers, really great job, particularly for your first event.

Also thanks to the FPCC members and other riders in the group that helped tow me round the first 100km or so at a rather unfamiliar pace for me on an Audax, and to Neil for the company on the second half when I couldn't hang on any longer!
