Waterproof overtrousers

I cut my last pair of overtrousers down to shorts but am thinking that a pair of long overtrousers would be good for Winter, but which?

They need to be good for recumbent and upright use, and it wouldn't hurt if they were suitable for walking in but that isn't very important.

Any suggestions from experience - make and model, please?

I use Rainlegs now. I used to wear Regatta waterproof trousers from Millets or your nearest army surplus shop.
Some, like the Regatta, are straight leg and others are more specific for cycling with pleated knees and maybe zip up ankles. If you go straight legged then trouser clip(s) may be needed to keep them from getting caught.

They work fine on an upright. Keeping lower belly to knee area warm, dry, and out of the wind. No idea how good they'd be on a bent though, depends how bent the bike is I s'pose.

How much are you looking to spend? These seem to be about the best around if you are looking for something that you're not going to get sweaty in, and if I ever get a courier job I might invest in some. Pricey though.

They look good but at a 34" waist size I'm 6'2" according to their sizing!

I'll try the rainlegs first. If they don't work I'll add the overshorts, and if not I'll look at full overstrides.
The rainlegs all always do on the Brommie and other upright.

I have a pair made by Karrimor which I have used on my DF bikes,Marj's recumbent & walking.They are very comfortable providing you don't wear longs underneath which creates too much condensation inside the trouser legs.

Got some Rainlegs after asking on here about them a few weeks ago. Haven't actually managed to wear them yet but I'll be up Keswick way on the Brompton tomorrow so I have put them out tonight.
Don't think they'll be any good on a recumbent though, water will blow on the back of your legs as you're at top circle on the pedals?

I got some dhb ones on sale at Wiggle. They are designed for cycling but work equally well for hiking.

Rainlegs OK on an upright but I reckon pretty pointless on a recumbent. If its wet enough to need protection one needs it below on back of thighs and groin = spray area.
I use very light Montane featherweights and they are the biz. Egg size storage and keep the wet off with breathability. Just the job.

I don't do a lot of wet riding so get away with an Altura Nevis.

Do Montane list a jacket to match the Featherlite trousers ?

They do but I wonder if it is good enough for 'benting?
I have an Altura Night Vision which is very waterproof but very bulky. It's also hot so when I wear it I have to take off a layer. Something lighter, less bulky and as waterproof would be good.
As an aside, I have had the zip on the pocket of the Altura fail and the zip pull on the front snap. Both times they've replaced the jacket but I've ended up without it for a week, or so.

Mainly because there is nowhere for the steam to come out of the vents at the back.
Like most jackets take it as read you are going to get wet when it's raining heavily. Warm and wet is good, it's when you get cold and wet it's not nice.
I had a really thick winter Altura jacket a few years ago which was great for keeping warm.

As Rich says - recumbents and sweating is an issue. I have tried loads of tops and rate them as follows:

Montane featherlight circa £30- tiny packaway top just great if its not raining for more than an hour. Don'rt wash it tho as it loses the watrerprooofing. Has some breathing action
Montane waterproof - circa £100 - bombproof for heavy rain. Has big slots but gets sweaty.
Endura stuff - sweaty heat trap.
Best all round solution - Gore windstopper jacket £140 - has a removable back so vents! And removable arms so you can roll them down. Best off all worlds and roretex waterproofing is OK provided you was with nickwax.
Mainly I think the answer is only to use waterproof if it is really raining - light showers are cool and refreshing I reckon. I don't use waterproofs for commuting.
