Couldn't they trace the owner of the postcard. Maybe the name/address on it would have been a clue...

I remember watching something similar a few years back, and one of the unusual items that they had on that occasion was an urn full of ashes.  I think they had kept that for a few years, expecting that someone may eventually claim it, but iirc they had decided to give up on that one, and dispose of it.  Presumably they scattered the ashes in a local garden of rest or similar, rather than selling it for charity!
Actually, it is rocket science.
