I used to believe that the U.K. was an improving meritocracy, with problems in certain areas, but on the whole, offering opportunity to improve your lot in life. Perhaps a little naive but I think not entirely so. Now however, the pendulum has swung so far back in favour of the privileged, that there really is no hope unless your parents can afford to send you to the right schools.
It’s reached such a level, that politicians don’t even need to try and pretend to be intelligent, let alone seem to have integrity. All that matters is who you were at school with, or who,you can pay off, so that you can get the endorsement of the right people and the great British public will vote you in.
I really do wonder why I bother some days.
