Title: Headset - damaged seal?
Post by: loz on 13 February, 2010, 05:50:44 pm
Hi all, I've never taken a head set apart before. One of the seals (above the crown race I believe) looks like it needs replacing - pic below.

Could anyone advise if I need to buy a new headset or could i buy an o-ring in the right size?

sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm utterly inexperienced with headsets

thanks in advance

The seal is probably especially shaped for the particular bearing.  You might get a spare from a dealer if very lucky.

It should be possible to use the headset without the seal if regularly serviced and protected with an external boot.

If you can ID which model it is (it looks like a Cane Creek headset) then there's lots of info about disassembly and spares here: Cane Creek Cycling Components :: Tech Center :: Headsets (http://www.canecreek.com/tech-headsets. ) You might be lucky and find there's nothing wrong with the seal.
