Is there anything out there that would let me create something like the Strava heatmap, but including retrospective data? I'm not interested in being competitive, & showing how far I've ridden this year, or how fast, or whatever, but it'd be nice to look at a map & see where I've cycled.

Veloviewer is very good for this though now has moved to a pay site basis. Still very good IMO.

If your retrospective data is in Strava, then http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/map.php will let you map it all (at least it's happy with two and a half years of mine).
Maybe something like http://www.gpxeditor.co.uk, but probably your patience for individual uploads might be the limiting factor there...

Relatively simple, without the online gimmicks:
Collect all you GPS tracks in one .gdb in mapsource
Make a screenshot of this
crop it to size
upload it somewhere as a jpeg.
This is the result of a few minutes of work (provided that you have everything handy in one .gdb), I should make a new one though, this one is outdated.
