BMX front caliper

I'm having trouble with the Tektro front brake on my son's Mongoose BMX. Frankly, it's rubbish. I've tried just about everything (various different types of pads, degreasing the rim, lightly sanding the rim, changing the cable and housing, etc.) and it still just doesn't stop. The back brake works fine, with the same rim type, so I'm pretty sure it's not an incompatibility between the pads I've tried and the rim surface.

Next I guess I need to replace the caliper - it's a fairly traditional single pivot, with the cable coming up from underneath (it routes down through the stem so that the bars can spin). That means that the Alhonge dual pivots I've got lying around won't work - they need the cable to come from the top, and foul the down tube if the forks are spun.

Being a bit out of the BMX scene, I'm not sure where is a good online shop to get bits from or what is considered a good BMX caliper; the usual shops I use don't seem to stock BMX bits.
Any ideas?
