Robert Rauschenberg

I was on the phone to E and casually turning the pages of the newspaper. Suddenly there was a full page obituary. E wondered what had happened as I became a little incoherent.

He was one of my favourite painters (using the word loosely, but using it because I dislike 'artist'), a master of sensuous colour and texture. I suppose you could call him a link between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. His work looked 'painterly' even when it incorporated screenprinted images and found objects.

His interests extended beyond painting to dance and music. He collaborated at various times with John Cage and Merce Cunningham.
