BN
Daughter's flat got burgled while she was out celebrating her 21st birthday. Every laptop in flat stolen (4 students, 4 high-end laptops).

GN
She's coping with it remarkably well.

GN
Our house insurance covers her laptop

BN
Cover is only for force-able breakins. Someone left a window open (which is really rare, they are normally incredibly careful to check when they leave the flat) and they told the police the window was left open. So the insurance almost certainly won't pay out.

That's standard burgling procedure here in Silly Oak.  Wait for someone's housemate to leave a door/window open, then pop in and round up all the laptops/iThings.

Life would be generally much easier if you could take out insurance against your housemates being crap...

:( Students are a high target group for thieving shits cos prevalence of easily stealable/sellable stuff + carelessness even amongst the most careful households.  My colleague who was a student where I worked said he used to see the burglars scouting places out from his bedroom window most days - this was before the active police presence/engagement where he could have tweeted at the plod or called 101 to send someone round to catch em in the act.

They are usually so careful. Walk outside their flat and check, looking down before they head off.

The daft wee ejits told the police that they'd left the window open, rather than saying that they couldn't be certain.

Didn't Timothy have a floppy hat (hence his original name). The brim on this one is as stiff as a board.

A couple of years ago I caught the ferry from Poole Harbour to Brownsea Island. There's a statue of Baden-Powell in his "Campaign Hat" on the quay. I was wearing my splendid Amazon Tarp hat. A bloke accosted me as we pulled in to Brownsea and explained that his Small Boy had thought I was Baden-Powell ("look Daddy, it's That Man."). To the best of my knowledge I haven't withstood any sieges in any South African towns.

Squashy, I think, which is not quite the same as floppy, but still probably doesn't indicate a board stiff brim. And I've only just twigged (at least consciously; perhaps it was some subconscious link that brought it to my mind in the first place) that of course you already are a Timothy, hat or no hat!  :D  ::-) :D

I could see the picture earlier, but now I can't. No matter; out of interest, where might one acquire such a fine piece of headgear?
