Title: AUK forum ( not this one ) missing
Post by: vorsprung on 01 August, 2015, 09:32:57 am
When I visit the old url for the AUK forum, the official one for members, it says "it's moved to forum.audax.co.uk" when I visit that address this is what I see

Am I just using the wrong address??  Any thoughts?

1) Go to SpecSavers
2) Purchase reading glasses
3) Carefully scrutinise the redirect address

(click to show/hide)

*smartarse mode disengaged*

If the new URL had been clickable (instead of plain text), then V would have juist clicked on it and been saved his blushes.

But then a smartarse would have nothing to do on a Saturday morning ;)

I click on the FORUM clicky on the top right of the aukweb.net homepage.

It is a clickable link on my display, but it links to the wrong address; hence the park page. It says 'forum.audax.uk' but links to 'forum.audax.co.uk'. It just needs re-jigging by the webmaster.

Yes, thank you, but that's really not very helpful! It is from that page that vrosprung clicked on the 'Forum' link in the menu at the left hand side, which gave him this (http://www.aukweb.net/forum/?action=login) page, on which is an incorrect link to the forum. Try it. You'll get the 'Sorry' page he showed us above.

Yes, Helly, I agree - but if you follow the route vorsprung took, you get that 'Sorry' page. This is the page you get to from the menu on the Calendar page:

(http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/TimC_1955/Screenshot%202015-08-01%2015.38.03_zpsecozniz7.png) (http://s22.photobucket.com/user/TimC_1955/media/Screenshot%202015-08-01%2015.38.03_zpsecozniz7.png.html)

The link at the top right goes to the right place, but the link in the second paragraph leads to 'forum.audax.co.uk', which doesn't exist.

Actually in this case it's BBCode:

Except it's not the HTML or the BBCode that is the problem, it's the URL.

Oops.  I didn't actually click the link, so I didn't actually see what the issue was.  Yup, the problem is with HTML/BBCode

This should work.

Mostly that a .uk (rather than .co.uk) suffix isn't that common, so is likely to be mistyped more often than not.

On a related topic, how many domain names does Audax UK need?

My answer used to be "one". But a lot of people got very very excited about how the old one was impossible to find (allegedly).

As esteemed posters have noted, the domain for the auk forum has changed . Not so apparent is that so has the ISP, and sadly changing ISPs is easier said than done. Hopefully - the gods of the internet permitting - we are now done, complete with redirect from forum.audax.co.uk to forum.audax.uk.

Audax.co.uk was only ever a stepping stone to the preferred domain of audax.uk though. Apart from having a domain that exactly reflects the organisation name, AUK officers and service providers now have functional email addresses of the @audax.uk variety, so we have secretary@audax.uk, validations@audax.uk, etc.

So we move on. Think of it as an incremental gain...

ps. when I get round to it I'll I've set a redirect from www.audax.uk to www.aukweb.net. Aukweb will be with us a while yet.

Stability of the new ISP appears to be somewhat questionable.  For the second day running, the forum.audax.uk site has been down for an extended period (and not just for me, if isup.me is to be believed).

"Put another 50p in the meter"

It's down again.  Good choice of new ISP, I'm sure it's rates were very competitive.  How they have managed to use a Sinclair ZX81 as a server is a miracle of modern computing :D

Same again here. I managed to get onto it for the first time in nearly a week, found the list of 'Unread posts since last visit' but now each of the links to those posts times out. My rural broadband is poor but <2mbps always used to be enough for the old URL/ISP. What's going on?

EDIT: tried again a few minutes later and it's working again - odd.

Not been able to get in since the domain name change a few weeks ago apart from a couple of quick glimpses. It keeps timing out.  Does anyone know if anyone's trying to sort it out?

Actually, not so. Some people have been able to access it. And there's now a thread there from HonSec commenting on the problem and assuring us that it will soon be fixed, hopefully. Although of course, those of us who can't access it, won't read that! ;D

EDIT: and having been teased by a brief glimpse via my desktop, enabling me to see the above, it's now timing out again on the Windows box too! :demon:

Not unless the irony in your post was intentional  ;)

There may be cacheing issues or DNS issues so that different people see different things, but what I see all the time since you posted that message is 'server not found' on 3 different desktop PCs and on Android tablet.  It's only the forum subdomain that's gone AWOL - simply www.audax.uk (http://www.audax.uk) does work, forwarding to aukweb.

After the domain move, what was immediately apparent was that the routine, whatever it is, that detects the small-screen device and switches to a 'suitable' display mode, was far more aggressive.  Previously it only rarely kicked in, now it was switching every time.
Then it seemed that that mode failed altogether, but without falling back to the standard browser mode, making the site inaccessible on Android.  At that time for a while the site was still accessible from the desktop with a standard browser, but a bit flakey.

www.audax.uk redirects straight to aukweb.net. The changes I made recently applied to forum.audax.uk only. Have you cleared your browser caches? If this doesnt resolve the problem please PM me.

I implemented the alternate theme for small screens as there were no responsive themes available for SMF when the forum launched and I had a titchy screen on my smartphone. You can return to full site mode by selecting the link at bottom right of the signon page. Thi is a peristent change so you only have to opt for it once. As it happens a responsive version of the theme we are using was launched in April so I'll look at that in due course.
