Back when I cared about telly, I had an older box with a RAID card as a sort of retirement home for old hard drives.  MythTV's backend will round-robin recordings into multiple directories, which made it simple to use a heterogenous bunch of disks.  When a drive failed, you'd just lose some recordings.
