Birds (feathered kind)
« on: 07 August, 2011, 01:27:28 pm »
This cheeky chappie was at Stonehenge eating scraps from the tourists.  You don't often see them in gardens nowadays.

Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Still plenty of starlings round here. We get a gang coming to our bird feeders every day in winter.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

The juvenile ones are even nicer - they have a fawn-coloured head and neck.

I seem to remember that the starling is the national bird of Russia.

And they can probably speak French, like Faberge and the Tsarist court.  They can certainly speak everything else!

I always assumed it was the cuckoo.

I think these are wagtails. On the church roof. One young, one adult?

Pied wagtails, subspecies of  White wagtail: Motacilla alba yarellii as opposed to M. a. alba. Part of a very wide range of variants, geographically.

Starling trivia: their eyes are aligned so they look straight along their beak, so they can see into the holes they poke in the ground.

Thanks Steph, you are singlehandedly helping me put away nearly 50 years of birding ignorance!

Another greenfinch here.

I hope it is a greenfinch  ;D

Yup. Interestingly, or so I am told, the green colour is from the structure of the feathers rather than pigment. Then again, that could be bollocks. With a greenfinch, listen for a long drawn out 'djoooozzzhhhhh' sounfd as a call.

The male ones are actually very green (although it varies by individual).  Quite aggressive-looking birds which tend to scare off the tits, although the bullfinches are unfazed by them.

Low light and rain - tricky for photographing
