Saw him get the UK record for the 100m at Meadowbank

In 1978, Wells signalled his ability when he became the British record holder with a run of 10.15 in Edinburgh before then making an excellent major championship debut.
I may even have a photo of it, if I trawl my negatives.

So - is this a slur?

It is simpler than it looks.

Can't really see that it's anything but hearsay.  Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, without a positive test it's really a moot point.

Of course it is hearsay. Most dope tests aren't aiming to collect positives and most dopers don't test positive anyway. Still likely to be true.

Lance Armstrong was convicted on hearsay which became testimony when the will to pursue it had emerged.

Panorama this evening covered all this stuff - a very thin prog with the bloke trying to mimic David Tennant's voice-over delivery and loads of moody film clip cutting.   No REAL evidence of anything that was believable.

Have to say Panorama has gone downhill since it was "The window on the world" with Richard Dimbleby    [For you kids out ther that's David Dimbleby's dad!]

Actual positive tests covered up with him mind, but you never know what may turn up I guess.

Considering what the East Germans and Soviets were up to at the time, meh.

I beg to differ.

In the absence of tests that are not circumnavigable, witness testimony is the only real evidence, and there was plenty of that.

Personally, I'm quite pleased that a British TV programme is willing to try to expose a potentially cheating British athlete (make no mistake, that programme was really about a British athlete) rather than the puff-piece eulogies that are the norm.

I think you'll find that if he was cheating, he was a Scottish athlete.

Yeah, it may have been small beer compared to those, but it was there to report on.  And then went on to talk about Salazar and his coaching. Must be very uncomfortable for some of the present big names.

I think you'll find my post was about the Panorama programme, which was not about Alan Wells ;)

But, regarding Alan Wells, he won 6 medals for Scotland at two Commonwealth games. His 10 other medals were won representing GB.

In an article today in The Herald (published in Glasgow), he's described as "The Edinburgh sprinter".

But which part of Edinburgh?

Makes no difference. They are all English there anyway ;)

The Surrey part, part known as "Guildford".
